Chapter 2: An Overview of Risk
Chapter 3: Projects and Project Stakeholders
Initial Postings: Read and reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Then post what you thought was the most important concept(s), method(s), term(s), and/or any other thing that you felt was worthy of your understanding in each assigned textbook chapter.Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook should be a source listed in your reference section and cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion.
Also, provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:
Background: SmartBridge Inc., a mid-sized engineering firm, has been contracted by the City of Glenbrook to design and construct a state-of-the-art pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the East River. The bridge is intended to improve connectivity between residential neighborhoods and the city center while promoting eco-friendly transportation. The project timeline is 18 months with a total budget of $9.8 million. The project includes environmental assessments, community stakeholder meetings, design reviews, and integration with existing public pathways.
Situation: Six months into the project, the following issues and uncertainties have begun to surface:
- Supply Chain Delays: The composite materials required for the bridge’s structure are on backorder due to global supply chain disruptions.
- Permit Delays: The environmental permits are taking longer than anticipated due to recent policy changes at the state level.
- Labor Shortages: A sudden shortage of skilled welders in the region is increasing costs and slowing work.
- Community Pushback: Local residents are raising concerns about increased traffic and safety, requesting additional revisions to the design.
- Technology Risk: The project includes integrating smart sensors and LED lighting, but the selected tech vendor is behind schedule with software integration.
Discussion Questions:
- What are examples of project risks in the SmartBridge project? Identify at least five risks and classify each (e.g., financial, technical, legal, environmental, stakeholder-related).
- How would you identify risks in a project like this? Discuss at least three risk identification techniques that the SmartBridge project team could use.
- Discuss the four risk remediation strategies? For each of the four risk strategies—avoidance, mitigation, transfer, and acceptance—apply them to a specific risk from the case and justify your choice.
[Your post must be substantive and demonstrate insight gained from the course material. Postings must be in the student's own words - do not provide quotes!]
[Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review]
