Designing Product, Service, and Processes

Overview

In the fast-paced world of operations management, organizations must align their process design with their strategic goals to remain competitive and efficient. This assignment allows you to explore real-world business challenges by selecting one of the following case studies from Operations Management in the Supply Chain: Sustainability and Resilience:

  • Eastern Gear, Inc: Job Shop (pp. 436–438): This examines the complexities of managing a small, custom manufacturing job shop. This case highlights how process design, capacity planning, and workflow efficiency affect productivity, costs, and customer satisfaction.
  • Sage Hill Inn Above Onion Creek: Focusing on Service Process and Quality (pp. 439–442): This explores how a hospitality business enhances its service processes, customer experience, and quality management to maintain a competitive edge.
  • The Westerville Physicians Practice: Value Stream Mapping (pp. 443–447): This demonstrates the use of lean principles and value stream mapping to improve patient flow, reduce waste, and enhance health care delivery efficiency.

Each case study emphasizes critical operations management concepts, including the following:

  • Process design and flow: Understanding how materials, services, and information move through an organization
  • Operations strategy: Aligning business processes with long-term goals for efficiency and competitiveness
  • Value-added versus nonvalue-added activities: Differentiating between activities that contribute to customer value and those that create inefficiencies
  • Quality management and continuous improvement: Applying concepts such as lean, Six Sigma, and total quality management (TQM) to optimize business performance

By analyzing these real-world scenarios, you will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address process inefficiencies, reduce waste, and improve overall business operations. This hands-on approach prepares you for decision making in manufacturing, service industries, and health care, where process optimization directly impacts profitability, customer satisfaction, and long-term success.

Your submission should be 5–7 pages (excluding title and reference pages), double-spaced, using APA format.Choose one of the case studies listed, then in a 5-7 page paper answer the following questions:

  • What are the main challenges presented? Identify the key operational or process-related issues affecting the organization.
  • Based on the product or service flow presented in the case, discuss if that flow is a help or hindrance to the efficiency of the company.
  • How does the organization’s operations strategy align with its process design? Is there a disconnect, and If so, what adjustments should be made?
  • Which steps in the process add value to the final product/service and which do not?
  • Recommend ways to eliminate waste and improve both quality management and efficiency.
  • How could you apply lean principles, Six Sigma, or TQM to the case?
