Overview

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to examine the defining qualities of greatness in companies that have made a pivotal transition from “good” (performing relatively consistently) to “great” (performing exceptionally). The purpose/goal is to look at the initial three chapters of this excellent book and explain some takeaways regarding leadership.

Parameters

Your presentation will be approximately 10-12 slides in length, not including the title or reference slides. No narration is required. Each group member’s name should be listed on the title page. The slides should be appropriately formatted with pictures and illustrations. All writing and presentation of material should flow logically and coherently.

Prompt

This project will be based on the book Good to Great. Please read the first three chapters.

Your group presentation should include critical takeaways from the first three chapters of this book, as well as answer the following questions:

  • What do you think Collins means when he says, “Good is the enemy of great”?
  • Given Collin’s assertion that guiding principles from good-to-great companies can be universally applied, how might these principles be adapted for non-corporate institutions such as educational systems or non-profits? Identify any possible limitations and necessary modifications.
  • What is Level 5 leadership?
  • Using a window versus mirror analogy, Collins compares differences between Level 5 leaders and typical leaders with strong egos. Why do you think Collins uses this analogy?
  • Why does Collins emphasize that companies should place an uncompromising value on getting the right people on (and off) the bus?
