Overview
Assigned Readings:
Chapter 4: Project Risk Management Systems
Chapter 5: Project Risk Contexts and Drivers
Chapter 6: Approach to Project Risk Identification
Initial Postings: Read and reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Then post what you thought was the most important concept(s), method(s), term(s), and/or any other thing that you felt was worthy of your understanding in each assigned textbook chapter.Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook should be a source listed in your reference section and cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion.
Also, provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:
Background: HorizonTech, a mid-sized software development firm based in Texas, is embarking on its most ambitious project yet—developing and deploying a cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system for clients across five international markets: Germany, Brazil, India, South Africa, and Canada. The project, named Project GlobalSync, is part of HorizonTech’s strategic initiative to expand its global footprint. With a 24-month timeline and a $20 million budget, the project requires coordination among internal departments, external vendors, and international consultants. Six months into the planning phase, several challenges have emerged: coordinating across multiple time zones, adapting to different regulatory environments, handling data privacy compliance, and addressing cultural misalignment among geographically dispersed teams. HorizonTech leadership is concerned that these issues may evolve into serious project risks if not properly managed. You have been hired as a risk consultant to guide the risk identification process and develop a clear strategy for managing risks associated with this global project.
After reading the case study, answer the following questions. Your responses should reflect critical thinking and demonstrate an understanding of risk contexts, drivers, stakeholder dynamics, and structured identification methods.
Discussion Questions:
- Identify and describe at least three major risk drivers that could impact Project GlobalSync. Explain how each driver contributes to potential risks in the areas of cost, timeline, scope, or quality.
- Recommend a structured approach for identifying risks in a complex, multinational project like this one. Discuss at least two risk identification techniques (e.g., brainstorming, expert interviews, checklists, or SWOT analysis), and justify why they are suitable for this project.
- How should HorizonTech engage internal and external stakeholders in the risk identification process? Provide strategies for stakeholder involvement and explain how their participation can lead to a more complete understanding of project risks.
[Your post must be substantive and demonstrate insight gained from the course material. Postings must be in the student's own words - do not provide quotes!]
[Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review]
Chapter 4: Project Risk Management Systems
Chapter 5: Project Risk Contexts and Drivers
Chapter 6: Approach to Project Risk Identification
Overview:
This week’s material discusses risk management systems and the iterative nature inherent within risk management. Risk management encompasses four main systematic processes: risk planning, risk identification, qualitative and quantitative risk assessment, and monitoring and controlling risks. As the world around the project constantly changes, the factors that impact and drive risks also change. For this reason, the process of risk identification should be ongoing throughout the project. Once risks have been identified and assessed for probability and impact of occurrence, risk treatment options for each risk are then discussed. The project team can choose to mitigate, avoid, transfer, or accept negative risks. These treatment options serve as the first line of defense. Risk responses are also devised, as serve as a backup plan should the risk occur despite treatment efforts. Treatment options for positive risks, also known as opportunities, include exploitation, enhancement, sharing, or acceptance. It is important to remember that a risk is something that has a chance of happening. Once a risk occurs, it is no longer a risk but becomes an event. When a risk becomes an event, the project manager must ensure that risk responses are implemented according to plan and that stakeholders are properly informed.
As outlined in chapter five of the course text, when identifying and evaluating risks, it is essential to consider the risk context. Internal factors such as stakeholder involvement, schedule constraints, resources, and project scope may introduce risks. External factors such as legal, environmental, social, technical limitations, and regulatory factors, to name a few, may also impact risk. Physical contexts such as weather, geographic location and infrastructure can also introduce risk to the project.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this unit of instruction, the student should be able to:
- Give examples of risk identification related to a specific project scenario.
- Discuss the processes involved with evaluating risks as to the chance of occurence and the impact should the risk take place.
- Expalin the concept of risk context and support with quality examples.
- Identify the purpose for applying context to risk.
- Discuss the four options for risk remediation and explain why one method might be chosen over another.
- Explain what Six Sigma means from both a math perspective and a conceptual perspective.
