Imagine you have been appointed as the team lead for a research study at Google. You are in a meeting with the CEO of Google, and he wants to conduct a research study to determine which generation uses the Google platform the most: Millennials or Generation Z. The CEO requests a one-on-one meeting with you and asks you for suggestions on how to begin the study and what steps should be followed to ensure the study is credible and accurate.
In your discussion post, explain the research process from start to finish. Using your own words, describe the key steps you would take to conduct this study. In your explanation, include the following:
- Define the research problem: What exactly is the CEO trying to find out, and why does it matter?
- Develop the research question(s): What specific questions would guide your study?
- Identify the population and sample: Who are you studying and how would you select participants/data?
- Explain the data collection method: Would you use surveys, interviews, existing user analytics, experiments, or a combination? Why?
- Describe how you would analyze the data: What type of results would help you compare Millennials vs. Gen Z?
- Explain how you would report the findings: What should the CEO expect to see in the final research report?
Next, describe at least three mistakes you would want to avoid during this research process and explain why those mistakes are harmful to the study’s credibility and accuracy. Examples of common mistakes to consider include:
- Asking biased or misleading survey questions
- Using a weak or non-representative sample
- Confusing correlation with causation
- Not clearly defining age ranges/generational groups
- Relying too heavily on opinions instead of data
- Ignoring ethical issues (privacy, consent, data security)
Chapter 3 in your textbook will help you identify and explain the research process. Be sure your response is written in your own words and reflects concepts from the chapter.
