Assignment Instructions A mid-sized organization has approved a 12-week initiative to replace a patchwork of spreadsheets with a lightweight cloud workflow. The sponsor has hinted at “quick wins” to the executive team, marketing has pre-announced performance improvements, and a first-time project manager is expected to launch immediately within a strong matrix where critical staff are shared across departments. On day one there is a charter and budget, but no detailed schedule, work breakdown, RACI, communication plan, risk/issue register, change control path, or definition of done. The vendor is ready to begin workshops, yet internal environments, access, and sample data are not fully provisioned. Leaders want weekly updates, but there’s cultural pressure to avoid “red” status, while compliance asks for early assurance on data handling. With time tight and expectations high, the project manager must establish execution fundamentals, align stakeholders, and set realistic boundaries so delivery speed doesn’t compromise quality, ethics, or operations.
Discussion Questions:
- What core execution artifacts should every project establish in Week 1, and why do they matter?
- How will you identify and prioritize stakeholders, clarify roles and responsibilities (e.g., sponsors, decision-makers, contributors), and secure timely participation and approvals?
- What elements belong in a high-level plan for the first month (scope, milestones, assumptions, success criteria, change control)?
- What communication and status cadence encourages transparency and timely decisions while avoiding a “no-bad-news” culture?
- Which risk categories (scope, schedule, cost, quality, resources, data, compliance) are most material at kickoff, and what early mitigations and checkpoints would you put in place?

- Use of proper APA formatting and citations. If supporting evidence from outside resources is used, those must be properly cited. A minimum of 3 - 5 sources (excluding the course textbook) from scholarly articles or business periodicals is required.
- Include your best critical thinking and analysis to arrive at your justification.
