Lab Overview

Low-code/no-code automation tools like UiPath are transforming how organizations approach process improvement. In this hands-on lab, you'll follow a comprehensive UiPath tutorial to understand RPA capabilities firsthand, then evaluate how this technology could realistically be applied in your professional context.

This lab gives you an authentic experience with a leading RPA platform while building critical thinking skills about when and how to apply automation technologies. You'll understand both the power and limitations of citizen development tools in the context of comprehensive process improvement strategies.

Remember: The goal isn't to become a UiPath expert—it's to understand how low-code RPA fits into modern process improvement approaches and whether it's a realistic option for your professional context.

Your Mission: From Tutorial to Workplace Reality

You'll complete a guided UiPath tutorial that walks you through building a real web scraping automation, then assess the practical implications for your organization or career development.

Getting Started

Review the UiPath documentationLinks to an external site. and then follow the complete UiPath Beginners CourseLinks to an external site. (Video Transcript). The tutorial walks you through:

  • Installing UiPath Studio Community Edition
  • Building your first automation (web scraping e-commerce data)
  • Working with variables, loops, and data extraction
  • Publishing to UiPath Orchestrator for unattended execution

Lab Activities

Phase 1: Tutorial Completion

Follow along with every step of the tutorial:

  1. Installation and Setup - Install UiPath Studio and set up your environment
  2. Basic Automation - Build the initial "Hello World" type automation
  3. Web Scraping Project - Create the complete e-commerce data extraction bot
  4. Advanced Features - Implement loops, variables, and data processing
  5. Deployment - Publish to UiPath Orchestrator

Documentation Required:

  • Screenshots at key milestones (at least 6 screenshots showing your progress)
  • Brief notes on any challenges you encountered and how you solved them
  • Final automation results - screenshot of your completed data extraction

Phase 2: Difficulty and Usability Assessment

Please reflect on the difficulty and usability of UiPath.

Technical Assessment:

  • Complexity Rating: On a scale of 1-10, how difficult was UiPath to learn and use?
  • Learning Curve Analysis: What aspects were intuitive vs. challenging?
  • Comparison to Other Tools: How does this compare to other software you've learned?

Professional Application Analysis:

  • Your Role Potential: Could you realistically use UiPath in your current or desired job?
  • Team Adoption Assessment: How easily could your colleagues or team members learn this?
  • Organizational Readiness: What barriers might prevent adoption in your workplace?

Lab Deliverables

Please submit your tutorial completion documentation and your difficulty and usability assessment.

This assignment meets the following weekly objectives:

  • Evaluate low-code automation capabilities through hands-on RPA development and assess organizational readiness for citizen development initiatives.
  • Integrate strategic and technical approaches by connecting redesign methodology with automation technology to create realistic improvement strategies.
Assignment #2

Scenario

You are the newly appointed VP of Operations at Meridian Capital, a mid-market investment bank that just acquired a competitor. The integration is failing because your client onboarding process takes 6 weeks while the acquired firm's process takes 10 days, but their process has higher error rates.

The Executive Challenge:

  • Your current process: 6 weeks, 2% error rate, high client satisfaction
  • Acquired firm's process: 10 days, 8% error rate, moderate satisfaction
  • Market pressure: Fintech competitors onboard clients in 3 days
  • Integration deadline: Board expects unified process in 90 days
  • Regulatory constraints: Financial services compliance cannot be compromised

The Dilemma:

The CEO wants "best of both worlds" - speed AND quality. Your analysis shows 70% of your current cycle time is approval layers required for compliance, but these same layers prevent the errors plaguing the acquired firm.

Key Stakeholders:

  • Compliance team: Insists current controls are legally required
  • Relationship managers: Want faster process to compete with fintechs
  • Operations staff: Overwhelmed by integration complexity
  • Board of directors: Demanding immediate competitive response
  • High-net-worth clients: Threatening to leave due to slow onboarding

Visual Assignment: Create Two Strategic Frameworks

Deliverable 1: Devil's Quadrangle Strategic Choice

Create a visual Devil's Quadrangle diagram that shows:

  • Four performance dimensions clearly labeled: Time, Cost, Quality, Flexibility
  • Your primary strategic focus (make one corner larger/highlighted)
  • Trade-off arrows showing what you're sacrificing for your primary focus
  • Justification text boxes explaining:
    • Why this dimension must be prioritized given the competitive situation
    • What specific sacrifices you're making in the other three dimensions
    • How you'll mitigate the risks of these trade-offs

Format: Professional diagram suitable for a board presentation

Deliverable 2: Heuristic Application Matrix (50 points)

Create a visual matrix showing your redesign strategy:

  • Rows: Select 5 heuristics from Chapter 8 that are most relevant to financial services onboarding:
    • Activity Elimination
    • Parallelism
    • Empower
    • Activity Automation
    • Control Addition/Elimination
    • Case Assignment
    • Trusted Party
    • [Or others from the chapter]
  • Columns: Four performance dimensions (Time, Cost, Quality, Flexibility)
  • Visual Requirements:
    • Impact symbols: Use +, -, or · symbols from textbook Tables 8.1-8.8
    • Application descriptions: Brief text explaining how each heuristic applies to client onboarding
    • Color coding: Green for positive impacts, red for negative, gray for neutral
    • Priority ranking: Number your heuristics 1-5 in order of implementation priority
  • Strategic Integration Box:
    • Explain how your 5 heuristics work together to achieve your Devil's Quadrangle priority
    • Identify any conflicts between heuristics and how you'll resolve them

Submission Requirements

Submit two professional visuals designed for C-suite executives (clear, concise, decision-focused)

This assignment meets the following weekly objectives:

  • Apply strategic redesign frameworks to analyze performance trade-offs using the Devil's Quadrangle and systematically select heuristics for complex business scenarios.
  • Critically assess implementation feasibility by analyzing when automation supports versus conflicts with human-centered process improvement approaches.
