work breakdown structure

Overview

Using the above as an example:

Your assignment will involve creating a clear and detailed WBS that outlines every major and minor task required to complete the PizzaCraft Outdoor Brick Pizza Oven project. Please use this Excel template Download template or this Power Point template

for your assignment. This is just a starting point. Please add additional boxes as needed.

Step 1: Review Provided Materials

Step 2: Identify Major Deliverables

Using the provided example, identify major highest level deliverables. Typical deliverables should include like initiation, site preparation, construction and so on.

Step 3: Break Down Deliverables into Work Packages

Break up each high-level requirement into sub-deliverables. (Hint: deliverables and sub-deliverables will be nouns). Keep breaking down sub-deliverables until you are at the lowest level that still makes sense. Under each major deliverable, clearly define individual tasks or "work packages." Be comprehensive and ensure all necessary tasks are included. For instance:

  • Foundation Construction
    • Clear and level site area
    • Prepare formwork
    • Mix and pour concrete slab
    • Cure and inspect concrete

Ensure to include tasks related to each major deliverable clearly as indicated in provided resources.

Step 4: Include Details for Each Work Package

Each work package/task should:

  • Clearly state the task description.
  • Include any special notes or specific resources (e.g., concrete type, number of bricks, mortar type, equipment).

Step 5: Use Intelligent Numbering to mark your WBS entries as demonstrated in our text and the image above.

Step 6: Organize WBS Using the format as shown in the pictures above

Organize your WBS to reflect a minimum of 3 hierarchy levels. Structure your WBS logically, clearly labeling each level (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, etc.).

  • Level 1: Overall Project
  • Level 2: Major Deliverables
  • Level 3: Tasks and Work Packages

Step 7: Review for Completeness

Review work packages and WBS to make sure the project is complete. Ask yourself, if you "add up" all the work packages, sub-deliverables, and deliverables would your project be complete? If not, then you are missing a deliverable or work package. Ensure to check against the following:

  • Completeness: all required tasks are included.
  • Clarity: clearly described tasks that anyone can easily understand.
  • Alignment: matches scope defined in the Project Charter and scenario provided.

How you can plan for success

Follow the steps above carefully.
