Writing Hints and Helps:

  • Paragraph structure/depth of research:
  • Minimum effort: Each paragraph contains two different citations and a minimum of five sentences.
  • Strong effort: Each paragraph contains three or more different citations and seven to ten sentences.
  • Avoid starting sentences with unclear antecedents such as "This, That, Those, It, etc. " Be specific to what "it" is.
  • Economy of words: only use the amount of words that are needed. Avoid the fluff.
  • Strengthen your writing voice: Remember that you are the author of this essay, and peer-reviewed citations and paraphrasing are your "support staff." For the most part, you should cite at the end of sentences.
  • Instead of "Smith (2020) notes that the theory of XYZ supports ABC in that........."
  • Say, "The theory of XYZ supports ABC in that........ (Smith, 2020)."
  • If you start a sentence with "Research says...." or "Studies show....", follow up with a multiple citation supporting more than one piece of evidence. For example:
  • "Research defines motivation as............. (Applebee, 2021; Smith, 2019)."
  • Avoid using back-to-back citations (the same citation in multiple sentences in a row)

Before submitting:
