Suggested Paper Structure
While you have flexibility in how you organize your paper, the following structure is recommended. All papers must substantively address each of the areas reflected in the grading rubric below.
Section | What to Address |
Introduction | Introduce the topic and its relevance to OB. Clearly define the trend and establish its significance in today's organizational landscape. End with a thesis statement or preview of your argument. |
Background & Context | Provide foundational context: What is driving this trend? What policy, technological, or social forces are at work? Use data and evidence to situate the reader. |
Analysis of Perspectives | Present and analyze at least two competing perspectives on the issue. Support each view with evidence. If you take a position, explain clearly why the opposing view falls short. |
Implications for Organizations & Leaders | What does this trend mean for how organizations operate, how leaders lead, and how employees experience work? Ground this in OB theory and real-world examples. |
Conclusion | Synthesize your key findings, restate your position or proposed solution, and offer actionable takeaways for business professionals and organizational leaders. |
Connecting to Course Content
Because this is an Organizational Behavior course, your paper must do more than report on a workplace trend — it must analyze that trend through an OB lens. You are required to explicitly connect your topic to at least two theories, concepts, or frameworks from the course textbook. Strong papers will:
- Name the specific OB concept or theory and explain it briefly in your own words.
- Articulate a clear and specific connection between the concept and your chosen trend — not just a passing mention, but a substantive analytical link.
- Use the textbook as a foundation and supplement it with peer-reviewed research to deepen the analysis.
This requirement exists to ensure that your paper reflects the learning objectives of this course, not just general business knowledge. Papers that do not engage with course content will be scored accordingly in the Critical Thinking & Originality and Research & Evidence criteria.
A Note on Sensitive Topics Several topics on this list — particularly those related to DEI programs, merit-based hiring, and legal scrutiny of corporate DEI practices — touch on issues that are politically charged and personally meaningful to many people. This is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to approach them with intellectual rigor. Graduate-level analysis requires you to engage with evidence, not advocate from belief. Regardless of your personal views, your paper must present arguments that are grounded in credible sources, acknowledge the complexity of the issue, and take competing perspectives seriously. Papers that read as one-sided opinion pieces rather than evidence-based analysis will not score well on the Analysis of Competing Perspectives and Critical Thinking criteria — regardless of which position they take. You are welcome to take a position. Just make sure it is a position you can defend with evidence and that you have genuinely wrestled with the other side. |
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy
The use of AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or similar) is permitted for limited organizational purposes only. The following guidelines apply: Permitted Uses Not Permitted Disclosure Requirement If you use AI for any permitted purpose, you must disclose this at the end of your paper in a brief AI Use Statement (not counted toward your page total). Your statement should describe which tool you used and how. Example:
Submitting AI-generated writing without disclosure is a violation of TWU's Academic Integrity Policy and will be treated as academic dishonesty. When in doubt, write it yourself. |
Grading Rubric — 400 Points Total
Each criterion is weighted and scored across four performance levels. Scores within ranges are at instructor discretion based on the overall quality, depth, and completeness of the response.
Criterion | Pts | Full Credit | Excellent (90–100%) | Good (80–89%) | Satisfactory (70–79%) | Needs Improvement (<70%) |
Introduction & Trend Definition Clearly defines the trend, its significance, and its relevance to OB. | 53 | Engaging, specific introduction with a clear thesis. Trend is defined accurately and its significance is compellingly established. | Introduction is clear and covers the basics; thesis is present but could be sharper. Significance is stated but not fully developed. | Introduction is present but vague or generic. Trend definition is incomplete or lacks clear connection to OB. | Introduction is weak, missing, or inaccurate. Trend is not meaningfully defined or its OB relevance is absent.
Research & Evidence Uses credible scholarly sources, data, and real-world examples to support arguments. | 80 | Multiple credible sources (scholarly and current) are well-integrated. Data and examples are specific, relevant, and clearly support the argument. | Adequate sourcing with mostly credible references. Evidence supports the argument but some sources may be superficially integrated. | Limited or inconsistent use of sources. Evidence is present but weak, overly general, or not well-connected to the argument. | Little to no credible evidence. Sources are missing, unreliable, or irrelevant. Claims are largely unsupported.
Analysis of Competing Perspectives Addresses multiple viewpoints; effectively counters opposing views with well-supported arguments. | 80 | At least two perspectives are presented with depth and nuance. Counterarguments are taken seriously and rebutted with specific evidence and logic. | Two perspectives are present but one may be underdeveloped. Counterarguments are acknowledged but the rebuttal lacks full depth. | Competing perspectives are mentioned but not meaningfully analyzed. Counterarguments are dismissed rather than engaged. | Only one perspective is presented, or competing views are absent. No meaningful engagement with opposing arguments.
Clarity & Organization Paper is logically structured; ideas are clearly articulated and writing is coherent. | 53 | Paper flows logically from introduction through conclusion. Each section builds on the last. Writing is clear, precise, and easy to follow. | Paper is generally well-organized with minor structural issues. Ideas are mostly clear but transitions or sequencing could be stronger. | Paper has organizational gaps that affect readability. Some ideas are unclear or underdeveloped. Structure is inconsistent. | Paper is disorganized or difficult to follow. Ideas are unclear, repetitive, or randomly ordered.
Critical Thinking & Originality Demonstrates analytical depth, insight, and creative application of concepts. | 53 | Paper goes beyond description to offer original analysis. Demonstrates genuine insight and applies OB concepts in fresh, substantive ways. | Some analytical depth is present but the paper leans more descriptive than analytical in places. Original thinking is evident but not fully developed. | Analysis is largely descriptive or surface-level. Limited evidence of independent thought or creative application of OB concepts. | Paper primarily summarizes without analysis. Little to no critical thinking or original perspective is demonstrated.
APA Formatting & Citation Proper use of APA formatting, in-text citations, and reference list. | 40 | Title page, in-text citations, and reference list are all correctly formatted in APA. No or minimal formatting errors. | APA format is mostly correct with a few minor errors in citations or reference list entries. | APA format is attempted but has multiple errors. Some citations are missing or inconsistently formatted. | APA format is largely absent or incorrect. Citations are missing, unreliable, or not in APA style.
Grammar, Spelling & Mechanics Paper is free from grammar, spelling, and typographical errors. | 41 | Writing is polished and professional. No distracting errors. Tone is appropriate for graduate-level academic work. | Writing is mostly clean with a few minor errors that do not distract from the argument. | Several grammar or spelling errors are present and occasionally distract from the content. | Frequent errors throughout. Writing quality significantly undermines the paper's credibility and readability.
TOTAL | 400 | 400 points out of 1,000 total course points (40% of final grade) |
A Note on Taking a Position You are not required to take a personal stance on your chosen topic — presenting and analyzing competing perspectives is fully acceptable and often produces the strongest papers. If you do take a position, your argument must be grounded in evidence and must genuinely engage with, not simply dismiss, the opposing view. The quality of your thinking matters far more than which side you land on. |
