- I really enjoyed the “Cultural Agility” book because it included strategies and relatable examples where you could see how these strategies were implemented. My key takeaway from the book is how intentional and flexible cultural agility requires you to be. It’s not a set of competencies that can be easily developed overnight, but requires ongoing efforts that are built on trust, communication, and collaboration. I have some experience working with global teams, and this book helped me understand why some experiences may have been more positive than others, and strategies to use to encourage more positive experiences. While cultural awareness and understanding are essential for becoming more agile, adaptability and flexibility are needed to be effective across different cultures and countries. One leadership style may be really successful in one country, but may not translate the same way or drive the same outcomes in different environments. Moving forward, I plan to leverage the strategies and best practices to continue building on these skills and empowering others to approach diverse environments with respect and empathy
- One of my key takeaways from Cultural Agility book is how significant self-awareness is as the groundwork for efficiently working across cultures. The book made it clear that cultural agility is not just about acquiring knowledge about other cultures, but about comprehending your own prejudices, communication style, and responses in unknown situations. I also found the importance on flexibility and perspective taking particularly beneficial, since international professionals must be able to change their behavior and outlook based on the cultural circumstances. The nine competencies presented a useful framework that I can continue to develop over time, especially in areas like fostering connections and navigating uncertainty. Generally, the book helped me to see that cultural agility is a continuing educational process that demands conscious effort, sincerity, and continuous contemplation.
