Overview
Overview
A competency approach is a common method to understand and measure leadership effectiveness. There are some similarities between what competencies are needed for effective management and effective leadership. However, there are many important distinctions. It is also important to understand that effective leadership is more than just competencies and a non-competency approach also has its place. Moses, for example, stood out as one of most effective leaders in the Old Testament. He did his best, however, to try and not step up to his leadership responsibilities due to his lack of communication skills, yet God used him to communicate his Word to millions of Hebrew followers. In other words, there is more to leading that just having a list of skill sets. The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize the student with scholarly content that could potentially be applied directly in current workplace responsibilities along with future research studies in leadership development.

The purpose of this literature review is to demonstrate knowledge on the different approaches in understanding, measuring, and using leadership competencies as it relates to leadership development.
