Weekly Discussion 4 - The Control Process

How Do You Know If You're Doing a Good Job?

The Controlling function of Management helps us understand if we are meeting our objectives. It's our job as Manager to be constantly evaluating "how things are going", and to make adjustments if it's necessary. We learn in Chapter 16 that there is a process associated with the Controlling function. Additionally, we learn about metrics, and the sources of information. In this discussion we are going to practice identifying the control process in our work situations.

Instructions:

For your Initial Post (by Wednesday):

Think about where you work, and how you know if you or your team is performing well. Using what you know from Chapter 16, provide deetailed responses to the following questions:

  1. Describe the Control Process for your organization.
  2. What metrics are being tracked? In other words, what is being measured?
  3. What area(s) of control are related to this process? This is based on the balanced scorecard in chapter 16.

This can be your department or team, or the entire firm. If you are currently not employed, used your most recent workplace. If you've never worked, interview someone you know or use your experience in a group/team project as your example.

For your Replies (minimum of 2, by Sunday):

Please seek and reply to at least two different students. In your replies, remember to engage with others using the guidelines in our course syllabus, information from the assigned reading and Professor's Discussions, and be sure to respond to those that engage with you.

Posts and replies should be complete thoughts, add value, and be written using College English. They should also contain examples and/or reference to the text/lecture where appropriate. Be sure to check back regularly and answer any questions posed to you. See the course syllabus for the quantity requirements and for more details. You won't have access to others' posts until you post in the forum.

AI Use: Not permitted. I expect thoughts and writing to be solely yours. Content and format of a post/reply that resembles AI will result in a zero-pause in grading, and require a meeting with me.

The course and college academic integrity policies apply to all submissions. I expect the work submitted here to be your own, and not that of other sources such as the text, internet, homework sites, artificial intelligence, or other individuals. When you adhere to the academic integrity policies, you ensure that your achievements are a true representation of your skills and abilities. Hard work now helps ensure your future success. I look forward to reviewing your work and providing helpful feedback!
