Weekly Discussion 7 - How Are You Motivated?

Motivation

It's in part what drives our behavior. How someone is motivated, along with exactly what motives exist, determine how we perform on almost any task. Understanding an individual's motives help us build a better relationship with them. The first stop in understanding behavior is to understand our own. Our self-awareness helps us be more aware of others' behavior.

Our chapter this week includes a number of motivation theories (ways to think about motivation.) At a higher level, we are driven by factors within us or external to us. This is intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation. In this discussion, you'll need to complete the accompanying self-assessment beforehand. There are no right or wrong answers, only insight. After you have completed the assessment, complete the items listed below.

Assessment - Are You Motivated from Within?

Instructions:

For your Intial Post (by Wednesday):

  1. Describe what you learned from the motivation assessment. Do you tend to be more intrinsically motivated, extrinsically motivated, or a mix of both? Explain.
  2. How do you think understanding what motivates you could help you as a manager or a team member in the future?

For your Replies (at least 2, by Saturday):

Reply to at least two other students. In addition to the what's listed in the syllabus requirements, compare your motivation style to your classmate's. Do you think their approach would work for you? Why or why not?

Posts and replies should be complete thoughts, add value, and be written using College English. They should also contain examples and/or reference to the text/lecture where appropriate. Be sure to check back regularly and answer any questions posed to you. See the course syllabus for the quantity requirements and for more details. You won't have access to others' posts until you post in the forum.

AI Use: Not permitted. I expect thoughts and writing to be solely yours. Content and format of a post/reply that resembles AI will result in a zero-pause in grading, and require a meeting with me.

The course and college academic integrity policies apply to all submissions. I expect the work submitted here to be your own, and not that of other sources such as the text, internet, homework sites, artificial intelligence, or other individuals. When you adhere to the academic integrity policies, you ensure that your achievements are a true representation of your skills and abilities. Hard work now helps ensure your future success.
