Sports management project

Step 1: Select a current event in sports that interests you, such as a recent controversy, a new policy or rule change, a current trend, or a new development in the industry. Ensure the event is relevant to the sport management industry and is one that could be considered sport industry news, not just general sports news (e.g., X team beats Y team).

You can use any credible news source you'd like. If you'd like, you can use one of the "Industry News" sites on the Career Development & Exploration in Sport Resource Page we introduced last week. Some of my personal favorites on this page are Athletic Business, Sports Business Journal, Front Office Sports, and the D1 Ticker newsletter.

While a normal game recap might not be considered industry news (e.g., "Florida basketball beats Georgia"), newsworthy events at games could still be considered newsworthy (e.g., CA wildfires necessitating a game location change, or a team being fined for rushing the field, or a new technology being debuted at the Super Bowl). You could explore trends in facility development, new facility construction/renovation projects, viewership trends or records, new leagues like TGL or Unrivaled, major ownership or personnel changes, financial/sponsorship/media rights deals, policy and rule changes, sport scandals, etc.

There must be a news story relevant to the current event or trend from the past three months. If you are unsure if your current event meets the requirements, contact the instructor.

Step 2:

Research the Event

Conduct in-depth research on the event, including:

  • Historical Context: What led to this occurring and/or how has this occurred before
  • Key stakeholders: Teams, leagues, athletes, sponsors, fans, local community
  • Economic & Social Effects: How will this affect the stakeholders?
  • Industry Context & Consequences: How does (if at all) the event reflect the current state of the sport industry, and what are the potential consequences for the sport industry?
  • Future Implications: How could this influence future policies, rules, or best practices in the sport industry?

Step 3:

Create & Submit Your Presentation

Prepare a presentation that explores your chosen event and its significance in the sport management industry. Your presentation should include these slides:

  • Slide 1: Title slide with your name and the phenomenon being analyzed
  • Slide 2: Brief overview of the current event + historical context (A)
  • Slide 3: Key Stakeholders (B) & Stakeholder Effects (C)
  • Slide 4: Industry Context & Consequences (D)
  • Slide 5: Future Implications (E)
  • Slide 6: References (include at least three references)
