One way that I can lead inclusively is by fostering a space where employees feel respected, supported, comfortable, and able to voice their ideas. I would start by recognizing that not every employee should be treated exactly the same way. Employees have different backgrounds, needs, and obstacles. I would spend time to get to know my employees, listen to their concerns, and allow everyone equal opportunity to share their thoughts and grow. If I were leading a meeting, I would specifically ask quieter employees for their input. I would also prevent anyone from dominating the discussion.

Additionally, I would leverage self-awareness by recognizing we all have unconscious biases. I would reflect on my decisions that involve hiring, scheduling, assignments, and promotions. I would ask myself if my personal beliefs were playing a role. Setting clear expectations and utilizing objective criteria can help eliminate unfair practices. Furthermore, I would encourage meaningful discussions about different perspectives. If I witnessed inappropriate comments or behavior that exclude others, I would address it.

After reading more about diversity and inclusion, I will ensure that every employee’s voice is heard and included. At the moment, I work in an environment where our employees are from many different cultures, backgrounds, age groups, and experience levels. Any place with diversity is capable of having a more inclusive space. Diversity can help an organization because each person thinks differently. Someone may recognize a risk that others would not. Each person may provide a different solution to solve a problem. My job is to help others feel comfortable and safe enough to speak up when they see something is not right, if they make a mistake, and/or to provide suggestions to improve our department. Employees should not fear embarrassment or punishment from their peers. I can encourage others by active listening, communicating, trying to understand others’ perspectives, addressing unconscious bias, and holding others accountable for their actions.
