4.5 Week 3 & 4 Reflection

Overview

See Current Event Format and Resources. Complete your research for a current event in the news demonstrating how a key concept from the Week 3 or Week 4 lesson is applied for this discussion. Must use different sources than those that post before you.

Original discussion thread post due by Sunday at 11:59 PM (EST). This requires an essay of at least 300 words (no more than 400 words).

  • Post Title: Use a title that represents the key concept or current event selected. Meaningful subject lines for posts, emails, blogs, memos, etc. are an important element in effective business communication as they act as the first impression and significantly impact whether your message gets opened, read, and acted upon.
  • First Paragraph: Introduce the article you selected, including who it was written by, where the article came from, as well as explain the validity or reliability of the source from which the article was obtained. Be sure to attach a copy of the article to your discussion post.
  • Second Paragraph: In your own words, summarize the key lesson concept and explain the ideas in the article regarding how it is applied. Support your summary including 3 supporting details from the lesson and article (be sure to use in-text citation).
  • Third Paragraph: Explain how this article elevated your understanding of the lesson, including your own opinion regarding the ideas it presents. This may include thinking about potential problems or risks, other situations or conditions, alternative opportunities or applications, etc.

Demonstrate critical thinking by paraphrasing the material into you own words (direct quotes should be used in a limited manner as this does not display critical thinking). To avoid plagiarism be sure to use in-text citation your sources (from the lesson and your article) such that you give credit where it's due, whether you're quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing. All citations should be in APA format with a reference listing at the bottom of the post (online resources require use of links in APA).

Further synthesize your research, referring to your own opinion on the lesson too. Be sure to build your thoughts from your research. Then use that research to base your opinion. Managers always must substantiate their decisions and recommendations, often that means building from the data and research similarly to support their opinions. The purpose of the assessment is for you to critically examine lesson concepts, using current events as your foundation for your ideas and opinions. Many times, we have an opinion that after we examine research, we find evidence of counterintuitive concepts that lead to new ways of looking at our original idea.

Two reply posts due by Sunday at 11:59 PM (EST). Each requires at least 100 words (no more than 150 words).

Review other original posts and replies. A minimum of two replies is needed for constructive communication and critical thinking about the lesson. Each reply must be unique to others in the course and should build upon the original post and other replies posted prior with further details on lesson concepts, articles, or provide additional research, business examples, etc. Understand simply stating agreement or disagreement, re-highlighting points already made in prior posts or replies, will NOT count. Replies must offer additional information or input to the discussion of the current event and lesson concepts. Be sure to give credit where it's due in APA format.

Use 3 dots or ellipses (top right) to show assessment rubric.

Current Event:

Current Event Format and Resources

Every other week you will reflect on the lessons integrating research from a current event. This is a significant, publicly reported news development from the fast few months that impacts society.

There are simply many tools and techniques used in each lesson. Competitive abilities are influenced by supply chain decisions and methods as they enable the value chain across the integrated and extended enterprise. There is no silver bullet or standard technique as it is often the diverse approaches that drive competitive abilities. Also, some of the best techniques are not readily shared as others may quickly copy to use to improve and innovate their own systems shifting the competitive environment. Why it’s important for supply chain managers to build habits to research and follow current events in the news. This skill helps managers monitor strategies for supply management upstream, as well as downstream to better meet customer demands.

For this assessment you need to complete some initial research before starting this discussion post. Be sure to complete the required resources in the sub-modules each week first as you need to further research a current event in the news demonstrating how a key concept from a lesson is applied. For example, identify key concepts in your notes while completing each sub-module. Then search online for a key concept in a current event article from a credible source, such as a well-regarded newspaper, business journal or magazine, etc. (NOT biased marketing materials). Identify an article, dated within the past 3 months, that demonstrates the application of the key concept selected.

This is a bi-weekly discussion combining two weeks of lessons. While we learn linearly, everything integrates to effectively manage implementation for the supply chain.

Tips for APA writing:

Purdue OWL – APA In-text Citations: When you are not directly quoting materials (i.e. paraphrasing from the source) you mainly refer to (author, year) where you use the source in your writing. Direct quotes should use also the paragraph number (author, year, para. #) since news articles do not normally have page numbers.
