Sep 10 9:37pmCase Study Research: Digital Considerations

Types of Iterative Bounding

Iterative bounding helps researchers establish and refine a case's boundaries as the study develops. Spatial bounding identifies the physical or digital setting included in the case, such as a specific organization, workplace, online platform, or community. Establishing a spatial boundary helps keep the study focused rather than attempting to examine an entire industry or digital environment (Mtisi, 2022). Temporal bounding establishes the period relevant to the case, allowing researchers to determine when to collect data or which period of activity to examine (Spinuzzi, 2023). Relational bounding focuses on the people, groups, interactions, or relationships that are relevant to the research problem. These boundaries help distinguish information directly relevant to the case from information outside its scope (Hansen, 2022).

Application of Bounding to a Digital Case Study Design

For my proposed case study of leadership practices and employee engagement, I apply spatial bounding to the case context. The study would be limited to one selected organization rather than examining leadership practices across multiple organizations. Within that organization, the study would focus on employees working in remote, hybrid, and on-site arrangements and their experiences with leadership practices and employee engagement. This boundary would provide a manageable context for examining the research questions while still allowing the study to explore differences among work arrangements (Mtisi, 2022). Because case boundaries can develop as researchers learn more about the phenomenon, the boundary could be refined during the research process if the collected data indicate that additional contextual information is necessary (Hansen, 2022).
