Overview:
The purpose of this discussion is to examine how personal perceptions, biases, and diverse perspectives influence leadership and group interactions. By reflecting on inclusion, identity, and cultural awareness, you will explore how effective leaders create environments that value diverse viewpoints, foster belonging, and strengthen collaboration.
Prompt: After reviewing this week's learning materials, choose two of the reflection topics below. Respond to each topic in a well-developed paragraph, using examples from your personal, academic, or professional experiences where appropriate. Support your reflections with concepts from this week's learning materials. (LO1, LO3)
Perception vs. Reality:
o Share a moment when your initial perception of a situation or person turned out to be incomplete or inaccurate. What helped you "see" differently? How did that change your perspective?
Seeing Past Your Own Perspective:
o The reading discussed epistemic humility—being open to improving your worldview with the input of others. How do you practice this in your daily life (or how could you start)? What challenges arise when trying to “dare to know” beyond your bubble?
Inclusive Leadership & Identity:
o Reflect on your own identity using the Four Layers of Diversity model. How do your internal or external dimensions of identity influence your interactions with others? How might they shape your assumptions, privileges, or blind spots?
Creating Common Ground:
o In a polarized or diverse group setting, what do you think it takes to create a “common reality”? What questions or practices can help bridge divides in understanding?
When Inclusion Isn’t Happening:
o Think of a time when you or someone else felt silenced, unseen, or misunderstood. What made that environment feel exclusive? What could have been done differently to promote inclusion of both belonging and uniqueness?
