WEEK 2:
Course Learning Outcomes
- CLO 1: Demonstrate scholarly writing skills.
- CLO 2: Apply critical thinking skills to review literature and research in the field.
- CLO 3: Synthesize literature from various sources to advance knowledge in the field.
Overview
This assignment is designed to develop your scholarly writing, critical thinking, and research synthesis skills through the creation of an annotated bibliography focused on doctoral student success. Building on the articles explored during your collaborative work, you will locate and evaluate additional peer-reviewed sources that contribute to understanding key issues, challenges, and strategies related to success in doctoral education. Through this process, you will strengthen your ability to analyze scholarly literature, identify meaningful research findings, and connect ideas across multiple sources within the field.
In addition to summarizing each article, you will critically examine the value, limitations, and future research implications of each source while applying APA 7th edition formatting standards. This assignment also introduces the use of a reference management tool such as Zotero to help organize and manage scholarly resources professionally. By completing this assignment, you will create a strong academic foundation that can support future research, literature reviews, and doctoral-level writing.
Instructions
Part 1: Create an Annotated Bibliography
In addition to the three articles used for your collaboration, find a minimum of three new peer-reviewed articles to develop an annotated bibliography. You should have a minimum of six peer reviewed articles included in your Week 2 annotated bibliography. For each article, include:
- Full APA citation (7th edition)
- Purpose of the study
- Key findings
- Critical Analysis (1 paragraph) - Discuss how this article contributes to understanding doctoral student success.
- Begin with a short statement of the author’s viewpoint.
- Summarize the theory, research findings, or argument.
- Comment on the usefulness and the limitations of the resource.
- Discuss the future research directions proposed by the author(s).
Each annotation should be approximately 600 words per article.
If this is your first time developing an annotated bibliography, or if you’d like a refresher, there is an excellent resource and a sample Annotated Bibliography included below to guide you step-by-step. The resource covers both the structure and APA 7th edition formatting so that your work meets scholarly standards:
- Resource: Annotated Bibliography in APA Format
- This resource includes a template and clear instructions to help you organize your citations and commentary effectively. Take some time to review it this week, and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions as you apply it to your own work.
- Sample: Annotated Bibliography
- MCPHS University Libraries. (2024, August 26). Example annotated bibliography. https://mcphs.libguides.com/annotated-bibliographies/example-annotated-bibliography
Part 2: Track your Sources using a Reference Management Tool
Track your resources by citing each source in Zotero (or a tool of your choice) using APA formatting, 7th edition. See the comparison chart of Reference Management Tools below. attached picture below please check

WEEK 3:
Course Learning Outcomes
- CLO 1: Demonstrate scholarly writing skills.
- CLO 2: Apply critical thinking skills to review literature and research in the field.
- CLO 3: Synthesize literature from various sources to advance knowledge in the field.
Overview
This assignment is designed to strengthen your ability to synthesize scholarly literature and construct a cohesive academic argument related to doctoral student success. Using the peer-reviewed sources from your annotated bibliography, you will move beyond summarizing individual studies to critically analyzing how the literature connects, overlaps, and differs across key themes such as persistence, mentoring, institutional support, well-being, and program completion. Through this process, you will develop a broader understanding of how doctoral student success has been examined within the scholarly community and how various researchers contribute to the ongoing conversation in the field.
Your synthesis paper should demonstrate analytical thinking by comparing perspectives, identifying patterns and gaps in the literature, and evaluating how the research collectively informs current knowledge about doctoral student success. The paper will also provide an opportunity to strengthen your scholarly writing and APA 7th edition formatting skills while developing a focused problem statement grounded in the literature. By integrating multiple sources into a unified narrative, you will build a foundation for future doctoral research and deeper academic inquiry.
Instructions
Synthesis Paper: Doctoral Student Success
Using the articles from your annotated bibliography and the week 3 collaboration, write a 4–6 page synthesis paper that examines the key themes, findings, and insights related to doctoral student success. Rather than summarizing each article individually, your paper should integrate and critically analyze the literature to develop a cohesive understanding of the topic. The goal is to construct a unified narrative that reflects the current state of knowledge on doctoral student success based on the sources you reviewed.
Through synthesis, you should compare and contrast how different authors conceptualize and examine doctoral student success, highlighting both shared perspectives and points of divergence. Pay particular attention to how each study contributes to existing research, including what aspects of doctoral success are emphasized (e.g., persistence, completion, well-being, mentoring, institutional support).
- Your paper must include the following components:
- Introduction and Problem Background: Provide a concise introduction to the topic and lays the groundwork for understanding the central problem the study addresses. A strong problem background situates the research within a broad academic and practical context, helping readers recognize its importance and connection to ongoing conversations in the field. The discussion is supported by evidence drawn from peer-reviewed research and describes how the issue has been represented or debated within the scholarly literature.
- Literature Synthesis: Synthesize the selected articles by comparing and contrasting their perspectives, findings, and focal areas.
- Themes: Identify major themes that emerge across the literature, Including points of agreement, and differences in viewpoints, supported with in-text citations.
- Patterns and/or gaps: Discuss any patterns or gaps noted in the literature
- Problem Statement: Conclude with a clear and focused problem statement that identifies a gap, limitation, or unresolved issue in the literature. Explain why this gap is significant and how addressing it could contribute to improving doctoral student success in your field.
Tips for Effective Synthesis:
- Organize by Themes: Focus on themes or concepts rather than individual articles.
- Use Comparative and Synthesis Language: Highlight similarities and differences, and employ phrases like "similarly," "in contrast," "builds upon," "extends," "challenges."
- Be Analytical: Don't just describe what the authors write, analyze how their ideas interconnect.
- Maintain Objectivity: Present the information in an unbiased manner.
- Proper Citation: Always give credit to the original authors via citations/references.

WEEK 4 :
Course Learning Outcomes
- CLO 1: Demonstrate scholarly writing skills.
- CLO 2: Apply critical thinking skills to review literature and research in the field.
- CLO 3: Synthesize literature from various sources to advance knowledge in the field.
- CLO 4: Differentiate key characteristics of various research designs.
Overview
This assignment is designed to deepen your understanding of research design and methodology by applying scholarly research principles to the study of doctoral student success. Building on the problem statement and literature explored in previous weeks, you will develop a research plan that demonstrates your ability to formulate research questions, align methodological approaches, and justify research design decisions. Through this process, you will strengthen your scholarly writing, critical thinking, and research planning skills while examining how different research methods can be used to investigate complex issues within doctoral education.
Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful alignment between your research questions, chosen methodology, and data collection methods while critically considering the strengths and limitations of your proposed study. In addition, you will evaluate the significance and potential impact of your research within the field, including how it may contribute to improving doctoral student success and advancing scholarly knowledge. By completing this assignment, you will gain practical experience in designing a research study and differentiating among qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches using APA 7th edition scholarly standards.
