LIFECYCLE OF A T-SHIRT
MAKE A COPY / CUT/PASTE INTO YOUR OWN DOC
Preparation: 1) Find a plain t-shirt in your closet. It can be any brand at any price level. 2) Watch the “Lifecycle of a T-shirt” Video in Week Two’s Module.
1) Based on the Lifecycle of a t-shirt video you've just watched, what are the top three cotton producing countries? Where do you think YOUR t-shirt's cotton was produced?
2) Math time! How many gallons is 2700 liters? That's how much water it took to grow the cotton for your t-shirt.
3) Do a little Google research which insecticides and pesticides are used in cotton fields? What are some of the negative health effects to people working the fields, cotton gins, and textiles plants of these substances?
4) Is your t-shirt made of organic cotton? Is it certified? (Only 1% of all t-shirts are made of organic cotton)
5) True or False: To process your cotton into soft sheets of fabric, more chemicals must be used.
6) What was the type of dye that is most often used to dye cotton called? What are some of its harmful effects? Fun extra look at harmful substances in everyday items: CA Proposition 65
7) Where are most of the t-shirt factories located? Global production has boosted by?
8) T-shirts (and all fashion apparel!) travel by Ship, train, and truck to get to you. This accounts for ___% of the world's global carbon emissions.
9) Which phase is the most resource intensive phase for a t-shirt? Each load of wash in a typical washing machine requires ___ gallons of water. The average American household does ____ loads of laundry to equal ________ gallons of water used per year in the average American household.
10) Dryers require 5-6 times more energy than washers. What does your t-shirt's care instruction say?
11) Name four-five things we can do as consumers to stop these issues:
SECOND ASSIGNMENT:
Look back at the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that we discussed last week.
Pick five UN SDG goals that you think MOST tightly align with the fashion lifecycle phases discussed in this week's lecture. Analyze each of the goals that you pick across Design, Production, Distribution/Packaging, Use, and End-of-Life lifecycle phases.
Note: You will probably have quite a bit to write about!
THIRD ASSIGNMENT:
You've now watched the Lifecycle of a T-shirt and maybe even the How Sneakers are made video. You may even have completed your Lifecycle of a T-shirt Assignment.
Pick one (or both) of the videos (if everyone is doing one, please choose the other!) and answer the following questions:
1) Did the lifecycle/how its made information in this video surprise you?
2) Name three compelling statistics you've just learned. WHICH phase of the apparel lifecycle process does each one of these statistics come from? For example, the stat on water usage in American home laundering comes from the "USE" phase. hint: refer back to the graphic in the module and/or the power point.
