Overview
Brief Overview:
We will be using the following case study: Corporate Entrepreneurship at Enagas: Transforming from the Inside Out https://hbsp.harvard.edu/tu/4652b9a6Links to an external site. to explore a number of themes relating to scaling up entrepreneurship and corporate "intrapreneurship" in larger enterprises. The questions will be targeted to our module content and subject learning objectives.
Background and Importance of Sustainability:
As the world focuses in on decarbonisation to tackle the climate crisis, we need collective action to innovate and create new technologies and services. As a recent article by McKinsey & Co attests, startups have been the first to scale up climate-tech businesses, but it’s not too late for the established companies to break into this domain (read the article here for more background: https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/sustainability/our-insights/accelerating-toward-net-zero-the-green-business-building-opportunityLinks to an external site.).
Assignment Details:
Read the case study and respond to the first three questions below. The final question is a reflection question and does not relate to the case study.
- Considering key themes and concepts that we have covered across the semester in MGMT90227, why do you think Enagas was successful with the entrepreneurship and innovation programs that were introduced between 2014-2017? Draw on relevant subject materials to support your response. (12.5 marks)
- In 2017 (see page 7), some company executives suggested that new ideas could be executed as internal projects run in a traditional innovation department, rather than pursued by internal ‘startups’ as part of the intrapreneurship program. Other stakeholders wanted Enagas to invest in external startups and acquire some ongoing businesses in the pursuit of decarbonisation. Which of these three strategies - (a) traditional innovation projects; (b) ‘startups’ within Enagas as part of the intrapreneurship program; (c) acquisition/investment in external businesses - would you choose and why? Draw on relevant subject materials to support your response. (5 marks)
- On page 8, we hear about Impuesto’s thoughts on how to approach the decarbonisation mandate. How should he redesign the Enagas Emprende intrapreneurship program to enable rapid growth and support the corporate strategy? What broader organisational changes need to be made to support innovation? Draw on relevant subject materials to support your response, including key elements in the congruence model. (12.5 marks)
- Subject Reflection (not related to the case study): Consider your learning across the semester. Are you attracted to startups, scale-ups or mature organisations pursuing entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship at scale? Justify your answer with reference to your learning in this subject (this might be learning gained through seminars, guest speakers or subject materials). (5 marks)
Format:
- Unlike previous assignments in this subject, this final assignment has short essay-style questions about the Enagas Case Study, similar to what you might find in an exam.
- There is no need to provide an overall introduction and conclusion; but each question response should start with a short introduction to your main arguments for that question.
- There is no need for further research beyond the materials provided on LMS, including seminar slides, required readings and further readings/resources located at the bottom of each module overview page.
- You still need to cite and reference the resources that you draw on to inform, and support, your analysis and recommendations.
- Tables, sub-headings, dot points or other visual aids can be used to highlight and complement key points and arguments.
- A professional writing style is recommended.
Marking guidelines:
- For each question, markers will consider the following criteria: analysis, argument, understanding and application of theory/research.
