Overview

Week 3 Blog Directions: Culture, Ethics and Diversity

Introduction

Lussier & Achua (2016) suggested that “Culture is created either by intentional design or by default. By design, culture can also be imposed on an organization by a new leader’s desire to change culture, so it aligns with his or her vision, values, objectives and strategies”.

In our current world, global exposure and technology has forced all organizations and leaders to take a moment to re-evaluate the organizational culture especially in relation to ethics and diversity. Recent pressure from media, politics and other environmental elements have forced all organizations to take a step back and evaluate culture, ethics and diversity policies and practices to be more inclusive. Further, Lussier & Achua (2016) posited that “Organizational culture may influence such performance outcomes as quality, customer satisfaction, innovation, turnover and absenteeism rates, workforce productivity, employee job satisfaction, creativity, commitment, and learning. A unique corporate culture can be the source of a firm’s competitive advantage. The strength of any culture depends on the degree to which these norms and practices are widely shared and strongly held throughout the organization”.

Blog Directions:

This week’s blog is intended to associate culture, ethics and diversity to leadership and workplace operations. There are many companies that are changing their mission/value/goals to become more inclusive. For example, Walt Disney’s culture, diversity and ethics is a benchmark for organizations world-wide. Employees go through extensive training to be prepared to meet the expectations. When they are at the workplace, they are always “on camera” and must act, dress, present a different way than we would if we are at home or at the grocery store. Disney’s focus is always “the most magical experience” possible. Disney is proud to have a college intern program that brings in students from all over the world. When you visit, you will meet guest from all across the globe. From an operations standpoint, the company has worked hard to set the bar high for commitment to culture and diversity. Most companies today are trying to strengthen their approach to these critical areas that have an extensive impact on everything from employee satisfaction to sustainability.

For this week’s blog, choose a public company to compare culture, diversity, and ethics. (Be brave and select one that is NOT meeting the world’s expectations today and give suggestions and/or a basic plan to improve these areas.
