There is a difference between Change and Transition. Theorist William Bridges explains the differences in his Transitions Model.
According to Bridges, change refers to a specific event. Examples include a new job, being promoted or demoted in the company, a company layoff, a corporate merger, etc. In other words, the day the change occurred can be identified because it is situational.

Conversely, transition is the process people go through in response to change. Transition includes the emotions people have and actions people do in response to a change event. To quote Bridges:

“Transition is psychological; Change is situational. It is not events, but rather the inner reorientation and self-redefinition that you have to go through in order to incorporate any of those changes into your life.” Diagram depicting emotional states of Transition: Every meaningful transition and transformation requires everyone to embrace the process that is required to transition. There are five stages of Transition: 1st stage = Settled. Comfort. Known. 2nd stage = Unsettled. Fear. Uncertainty. Concern. Moving toward the unknown. 3rd stage = Chaos. Left what you knew. But aren’t quite at where you are heading/going. Equal parts scary and exciting. 4th stage = Change accepted. Start to settle into the new normal. Still doesn’t feel naturally comfortable but acceptance of a new destination begins. 5th stage = Culture normalizes comfortably into the new normal. To complete this assignment, identify an example of when a leader has guided people through change. This can be something you have personally experienced, or it can be an analysis of a well known event in history or current day. Students can choose personal experiences, historical events, religious events, corporate transformation, or even a club, organization, fraternity, or sports team example. Use the Bridges Transition Model and the 5 stages listed in this assignment's instructions to outline what occurred in your example, and how the LEADER guided people through their transition in a Change event.
