Overview
Scholarly, robust work is critical at the graduate level. Most of your work should be supported by peer-reviewed research. Locating, understanding, and evaluating peer-reviewed articles can be difficult for students. To provide an introduction to using and evaluating peer-reviewed resources, you will complete an article critique following the guidance below. The Excelsior Library and Excelsior OWL have many excellent resources that might be of assistance as you craft your paper. You can also utilize the tutor me feature embedded within the course.
Step I: Complete the following readings.
- The Scientific Method
- Digesting Scientific Research
- Additionally, review the library tutorials on peer-review and the library tip sheet.Links to an external site. Use the tip sheet and tutorials to understand peer-review and how to locate peer-reviewed journal articles.
Locate a peer-reviewed journal related to leadership styles and public management and leadership. The article should be published within the past five years. Thoroughly read the journal article. You may need to then review the article again to craft your paper.
Step II: Provide a 2-3 page article critique that identifies and assesses the article. Address these specific areas in your paper:
- Who is the author, what are the author’s credentials, and what qualifies the author to write on the topic?
- What is the premise of the article?
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article? Do the researchers clearly explain the background and significance of the study? Do the researchers discuss limitations, assumptions, and ethical concerns? Is the tone of the article academic or professional?
- What was the research methodology for the study? Was the methodology appropriate for the research question or hypothesis? Why or why not?
- Did the author situate their research within the current literature? Is there a thorough review of the pertinent literature related to the topic?
- Was there a specific conceptual or theoretical framework? How did this inform and guide the research?
- Is there any evidence of bias in the article?
Step III: Use the most recent American Psychological Association (APA) style edition for writing your assignment.
