Jacob Guidelines & Importance of an Organizations Strategy Statement
A basic definition of a strategy statement is a summary of an organizations business strategy. In successful companies it is consistently used to aide in strategic decision making and planning throughout the organization. Creating a powerful strategy statement enables organizations to clearly state what is important to them and aids in aligning executive decisions as well as employee motives. It guides the company to progress towards a common goal and implement new processes efficiently. Collis and Rukstad (2008) state that a strong strategy statement should clearly define three elements: objective, scope, and competitive advantage.
- Defining the company objective needs to be specific and used to grow the company for the next three to five years. The objective should not be vague such as improve shareholder value, these statements are meant for a company mission statement. Instead, the objective should explain how the company will maximize shareholder growth and what the company will pursue.
- The scope involves three dimensions: customer, geographical location, and vertical integration. The goal of element should be to create boundaries of what the organization should focus on. What type of customers, what geographic areas, or the extent of production or distribution the company is willing to take on. Defining these boundaries allows organizations to benefit from simplicity, standardization, and experience.
- Gaining a sustainable competitive advantage is vital for the success of any organization and the essence of developing a strategy. At its’ core, a competitive advantage is what defines one company from its competitors. This advantage gives an edge to the company; therefore, it should be defined, and the company shaped around it.
Personal Strategy Statement
I currently work as a mechanical engineer for an automation company, Dematic. The company creates custom automation solutions for customers distribution centers and warehouses. Below is the strategy statement I have constructed for Dematic.
Utilize the established reputation of the company and exceptional customer service to provide custom and innovative automation solutions to improve customers distribution and logistical networks globally.
The objective is to provide custom and innovative automation solutions. The company has a high focus on using cutting edge technology and providing efficient solutions. The scope creates boundaries stating that our customers will focus within the logistics industry, improving distribution centers and warehouses while also stating that Dematic is a global company. This is important because Dematic does not currently expand into automation solutions in other sectors such as manufacturing. Finally, the companies’ competitive advantage is stated as their established reputation and exceptional customer service. Dematic is a market leader in the automation industry and provides automation solutions for high valued customers like Amazon, Walmart, and numerous pharmaceutical companies.
HR Metrics & Strategies
Personally, I feel like there is a major disconnect between the business side of the company and the project execution side. I have never spoke to my HR department, or even know who they are or how to contact them. As a mechanical engineer, I am on the project execution side. Project managers, sales reps, mechanical/electrical/software engineers, manufacturing, installation teams, etc. are all on the project execution side. We regularly have all-hands companywide meetings and often there will be some business executive that is announcing a new policy or process that is being implemented. 99% of the time, no one on the project execution side has any idea who this executive is, and the new policy ends up making the project execution side more difficult. I think that the business side of the company could benefit greatly from creating metrics and strategies that focus on the project execution side of the company.
While researching important HR metrics, one that I took notice to was HR to employee ratio. At first glance, my thought was my organization could lower their HR to employee ration since no one even interacts with them. In reality, I think the issue is the opposite. I believe there are not enough of HR professionals, and therefore the company is unable to effectively fulfil the needs of the HR department. By increasing the HR to employee ration, meaningful feedback can be gathered from the project execution side and processes and policies can begin to be implemented to improve those areas. This feedback directly relates to and can improve other important HR metrics such as turnover, retention, training, employee satisfaction and engagement (Vulpen, 2024).
From a manager’s perspective, I think an important HR issue that will impact the business world is remote work. HR professionals are often responsible for recruiting, onboarding, and training, but also improving employee relations and ensuring a positive workplace culture. I think each of these tasks become increasingly difficult in a digital realm. Recruiting does have the benefit of a larger workforce pool, but it also takes away the personal interaction you gain with meeting someone in person. Onboarding and training must be curated to be engaging so employees do not get distracted at home. Finally, employee relations and positive workplace cultures will need to be redesigned to build any meaningful team relationships (Lucidchart, 2019).

The organization I chose is Autozone. The first part of the strategy statement should focus on customers and customer service. This is important because it creates a loyal customer base. However, the customer's needs are aligned with the capabilities of Autozone. Autozone is capable of providing car parts for a fair and honest price. This will allow them to maximize profits while remaining competitive with their customer base. Sustainability and ethics are also important for Autozone's strategy.
Looking at this current strategy they put the customers first by providing exceptional customer service. They also prioritize expanding revenue and maximizing profits and shareholder value. Autozone has done this by strategically increasing retail sales and going international by developing its businesses in other countries such as Mexico.
While maximizing profits, Autozone is also committed to ethics and ensuring there are people in the company who provide a diverse angle to business and retail sales. Autozone also provides metrics on sustainability and environmental efforts. Looking at statistics from this past year Autozone has seen improvement in profits and market expansion. "In Mexico, our footprint increased 8.3% as compared to Q2 FY24." (Autozone Inc, 2025). Autozone has also increased net sales by 2.4% in the past year. Autozone has also provided statistics on its commitment to sustainability and environmentally conscious business practices. This includes 14.4 million gallons of oil that AutoZone has recycled. Autozone also uses a few different reporting frameworks to ensure market sustainability and continued maximization of shareholder value. Autozone also provides metrics for diversity. This includes 46% of employees being diverse and 30% of the Board of Directors being women.
Looking at the future of HR and the possible issues that can arise there are a few things that can be analyzed. The first problem is the ability for a flexible work environment. In a post-COVID business world, the hybrid work model has been utilized by many different industries. Companies and HR departments need to stay competitive and provide flexible work environments to attract new talent and keep employee retention high. AI has become another obstacle in the business world and talent acquisition may become tricky with new AI software. "1 in 4 organizations that use AI to support HR-related tasks, nearly two-thirds only began doing so in 2023." (Rockwood 2025)
