Resources for using Tableau
This assignment uses Tableau and will count toward your Citizen Data Science (CDS) certificate. This assignment is mandatory for the course, and you must complete it even if you do not need the credit for the CDS certificate.
- Here is a tutorial on Tableau: Tableau Demonstration Video

- If you have questions about Tableau, the best resource is to reach out to Tableau Help Lab. Don't hesitate to get in touch with them first rather than emailing me. The instructors at the Tableau Help Lab are experts in this program.
- Once you complete the assignment, you can record your analysis using MS Teams Download MS Teamsor other screen recording programs.
Assignment Objective
The objective of this assignment is to become familiar with the visualization tool, Tableau. Tableau helps people see, understand and act on data. Many organizations of all sizes utilize this powerful visual analytics platform, and becoming familiar with this program will provide students with a competitive edge over their peers. Furthermore, completing this assignment will count toward your Citizen Data Science (CDS) certificate. Having the CDS certificate will signal to employers that you have data analytics skills using Tableau.
Instructions
1. Open the data Download data in the Tableau Program and familiarize yourself with the dataset. The description of the dataset and the variables are available in this document Download document. Describe what type of secondary data represented by this dataset.
2. Visualization 1 – Bar Chart
Create a bar chart of Average Age by Gender; Each bar should represent each gender; you should label the average age. You should show up to two decimal places. Make sure you label the "sheets" in your Tableau workbook with meaningful titles that explain your charts. (Note: do not turn on any filter when you perform this analysis. I want to see the overall average age by gender).
3. Visualization 2 - Map
You can create a map by selecting a “State” Variable (Make sure you choose “map” and not “symbol map”; You should have one map rather than separate images of independent states). Create a map chart of the Average Purchase Amount by State. Meet the following criteria to receive full credit
- Include two labels for both the average purchase amount (in two decimal places) and the state name.
- Change the color visual to a “Green-Gold” scheme (this means each state should have a different color based on the average value).
- Name the "sheets" in your Tableau workbook with meaningful titles that explain your charts. (Note: do not turn on any filter when you perform this analysis. I want to see the overall values without the filter).

4. Visualization 3 – Your choice of analysis using two variables
Analyze the data using Tableau Analysis tools and create your own visualization. Your visualization must involve summarizing two variables (i.e., multivariate analysis) rather than summarizing a single variable (e.g., Univariate analysis). You need to label the visualization so that it is meaningful for the audience (You should show up to two decimal places). Make sure you label the "sheets" in your Tableau workbook with meaningful titles that explain your charts.
5. Interactive Dashboard
Arrange all charts on your dashboard in a way you think is most visually appealing; Add interactivity by using the filter icon In the upper right corner so that you can filter (drill-down) within each of the charts. Dashboard interactivity means that you apply filters to the visualizations, so when you choose one element, it will change ALL visualizations within the same dashboard. You should provide at least three insights while navigating the dashboard. Watch these videos to learn how to use the interactive dashboard:
6. Record and Upload on Youtube - Upload the video on Youtube as 'unlisted'. Tableau App Guide Download Tableau App Guidehas useful information about programs for creating a video and how to upload an unlisted YouTube video to obtain the URL
7. Submit URL - Submit your unlisted YouTube URL in this assignment
Grading Rubric
1. (5 points) Follow guidelines and describe the type of secondary data. You need to follow all of the video guidelines below.
- Show your face at least in the beginning or throughout the video
- Start with a brief introduction (name and U#) (less than 30 seconds)
- Explain the dataset and the assignment. Describe the type of secondary data used in this assignment (less than a minute)
- Show each sheet to explain what each chart represents. Make sure each sheet is labeled correctly (less than two minutes total)
- The rest of the video should present multiple insights found while navigating the dashboard. You must discuss which interactive filter you turned on and describe the change in visualization based on the filter (at least two minutes).
- The total video length should be at least three minutes (no longer than six minutes).
2. (5 points) Visualization 1 – Bar Chart
- Label the "sheet" in Tableau workbook with a meaningful title
- Did not turn on any filter (I want to see the overall values without the filter)
- Correctly show the overall average age by gender
- Correctly label the average age up to two decimal places
- In video analysis of this worksheet (1 minute max), student should show the worksheet, describe how he/she created the chart, and explain what the chart represents.
3. (5 points) Visualization 2 – Map
- Label the "sheet" in Tableau workbook with a meaningful title
- Did not turn on any filter (I want to see the overall values without the filter)
- Show the whole map of the United States and not separate images of independent states
- Provide two labels on the map which are the name of the state and the average cold beverage consumed per day (in two decimal places)
- Select "Green-Gold" color scheme
- In video analysis of this worksheet (1 minute max), student should show the worksheet, describe how he/she created the chart, and explain what the chart represents.
4. (5 points) Visualization 3 – Your choice of analysis
- Label the "sheet" in Tableau workbook with a meaningful title
- Did not turn on any filter (I want to see the overall values without the filter)
- Provided visualization of more than one variable (i.e., multivariate analysis) rather than summarizing a single variable.
- In video analysis of this worksheet (1 minute max), student should show the worksheet, describe how he/she created the chart, and explain what the chart represents.
5. (10 points) Interactive Dashboard
- Arrange all charts on your dashboard in a way you think is most visually appealing
- Turned the filter on so that all charts are interacting with each other. You must discuss which interactive filter you turned on and describe the change in visualization based on the filter
- Student needs to drill down on each chart and provide at least three insights while navigating the dashboard.
- Video analysis of interactive dashboard should be at least two minutes.
