Reflecting on Focus Groups

Overview

A Reflection on the Use of Focus Groups & Depth Interviews in Marketing Research

In this module, you have been (briefly!) introduced to the world of in-depth qualitative communication-based (re: interview) research. In Marketing Research, this *mostly* means FOCUS GROUPS (and in-depth, semi-structured interviews as well).

As we learned, focus groups have been around many decades, and they've been quite influential in terms of shaping marketing practice! While proponents of focus groups emphasize many of the advantages of focus groups, there has also been many problems and risks associated with relying on the use of focus groups.

In modern times, some marketers have become even more critical of focus groups. Aside from the normal challenges with focus groups, critics have argued that new problems with focus groups have emerged recently. Furthermore, contemporary marketing researchers argue that there are newer and superior research techniques available to investigate issues that used to be studied in focus groups.

Your previous readings and videos cover some of these issues.

This article goes into more depth: "Focus Groups Shape What We Buy. But how Much Do They Really Say About Us?" by Joseph Stromberg for Vox.com (Jan. 22, 2019) At an even deeper level, this article levels a more profound criticism about focus groups: "Talk is Cheap: The Myth of the Focus Group," by Liza Featherstone for The Guardian (Feb. 6, 2018)

WRITING PROMPT: In 200 to 400 words, provide your own view on the key problems of using focus groups for marketing research. Explain WHY these are problems. In particular, I'd like for you to discuss whether you see each problem as always "inherent" when using focus groups *or* whether you see this problem as an example of marketing researchers simply using focus groups for the wrong research purpose ("trying to fit a square peg into a round hole").

GENERATIVE A.I. OPPORTUNITY / COMMENT:

  • Note that this assignment is NOT asking you to re-summarize the articles. I want YOUR thoughts.
  • For this assignment, you can use generative A.I., like ChatGPT to help start your thinking/prompts. However, make sure you adhere to the class policy for citing Generative A.I. usage. Also, I'd really encourage you to be careful with Gen A.I. here.
