In the last 15 or so years, marketing has been a rapidly evolving profession. I want you to take a look at the job titles and requirements associated with marketing roles. Conduct an internet search and identify the kinds of titles that marketers hold and the skills they are required to have. Look at varying levels, from entry to C-suite. Read some articles about hiring for marketers and review job-board announcements for marketing roles. Report here about what you've found, answering the following questions:

  • What kinds of titles do marketers hold?
  • What are some of the skills they're required to have? How do skill needs vary by role?
  • Were you surprised by what you found? If so, what specifically was surprising? If not, why not?
  • Finally, if you were hiring for a marketing role, what specifically would you be looking for in a candidate?

For this discussion, you will first be tasked with finding two examples: one where companies were displaying tactics that showed they were customer-obsessed, and one where they were not. Your examples could come from personal experiences or from articles, ads, posts on social media, and the like.

For each example, provide a brief summary of the situation, making sure to include any pertinent links (tweets, videos, articles, etc.). Keep in mind, you may need to do some digging to more clearly understand the scope of the situation, both from the customer's perspective and from the business perspective. Then, analyze the business' actions in each example:

  • For positive examples, describe what indicators you saw of customer-obsessed tactics.
  • For negative examples, how did the business' lack of focus on the customer manifest? What should or could they have done differently to demonstrate that they were customer-obsessed?
