Human Cognition and Interface Design

1-Instructions

For this topic, please discuss a mini biography here and reply to, and comment on two other students' bios. A bio should include whatever you would tell a person you just met, whatever you are comfortable sharing. For example (these are not required, but just guidelines). What aspects of "perception being baised" (Chapter 1 & 2 readings) influence or "frame" your answers?

  • Where are you from?
    • For example I am from the United States. But Why did I say United States? Why not California? Or San Diego? Or the blue house on Main Street next to the grocery store. What caused me to answer the way I answered? habit? priming? context? etc?
  • Where are you now?
  • What is your educational background
  • Are you married, single, have kids, pets, hobbies?
  • Do you work or what work have you done?
  • Why are you here, in class?
  • What do you want to do next in life?
  • What do you do for fun?

Be sure to discuss the theories, studies, opposing theories that explain/support your argument WHY DID YOU ANSWER AND "FRAME" YOUR ANSWERS THE WAY YOU DID?!?

Expectations:

  • 3 posts for each topic
  • Each post should be at least 250 words
  • Your responses to your classmates should be sufficient and move the conversation forward, one or two sentence responses do not earn credit.
  • Real life examples, Case Studies, Diagrams, figures, and references, ideas, examples, refer to reading, as needed
  • Be sure to discuss the theories, studies, opposing theories that explain/support your argument
  • Include at least 2 references to support your argument
  • Respond to the Discussion Question posted by your instructor (by Thursday) and respond to at least two peer's posts (by Sunday)

2- Instructions

As we begin to think about human interaction and user design, share with your classmates the following. 1. Explain a site, app or digital experience you think is excellent as a user - what brand? Product/service? What makes this a great experience?

2. Explain a poor experience you've had, why was not what you hoped for? Be specific as a user and relating to the usage of the site or the app specifically. Not, for example, that the app was great but the food you ordered was bad. Be specific to the digital experience - what was poor? 3. Explain how you like to be served information in a app or website - what are some of the ways you prefer consuming? For example, do you want it to ask you preferences up front when you sign up, or do you prefer search/filter?

3- Instructions

Respond in at least 250 words:

Imagine you are a designer for a brand you admire, or your own company/startup, and must create a new app or website, or re-design an existing one, to respond to the desire for more intuition, adaptive experiences we all want today. 1. What is the business you will be focusing on in this class -describe in detail

2. Is this a website/app or other experience you will have in mind you are working on enhancing?

3. What are some challenges you may face in designing this to do a better job servicing the needs of your users, and allowing it to be more adaptive, responsive, easy to use and appealing for your target audience?

4-Instructions

After reading Chapters 1 & 2

Answer in at least 250 words, respond and apply some of your own personal examples:

  • List the three factors that influence our perception of the world.
  • Provide examples of ways perception is biased by experience.
  • Define perceptual patterns, or frames.
  • Describe how perception is biased by current context.
  • Discuss how perception is biased by goals.
  • List the two mechanisms by which our current goals bias our perception.

5-Instructions

Respond to the Discussion Question posted by your instructor (by Thursday) and respond to at least two peer's posts (by Sunday).

The text discusses how the human optical system (a fancy name for eyes) processes color. Of course the true processor is the human brain. Only when both are working properly can we see, and see in color. So, for this discussion, you get to live (at least virtually) in a slightly different world.

When you wake up tomorrow, everything looks similar to what it did, today, except you soon notice that you can see no color, just black and white, and shades of grey. There two parts to this assignment.

6-

Instructions

Respond to the Discussion Question posted by your instructor (by Thursday) and respond to at least two peer's posts (by Sunday).

The text notes that "applications should never move items around in menus, lists or pallets". Let's choose the most tasty item here. Please choose a restaurant menu and discuss the organization of items. How/where are omelettes and breakfast foods listed, compared to lunch or dinner items? Probably, Breakfast first, then lunch, then dinner? right? Why? A. Share why YOU think that is. Also B. How/where are side dishes and drinks listed in relation to meals. And why?

Then reply to others' posts.

Be sure to discuss the theories, studies, opposing theories that explain/support your argument Include at least 2 references to support your argument

A. What would you do differently that day to get on with your life?

B. What would have to change in our societies?

Be sure to discuss the theories, studies, opposing theories that explain/support your argument Include at least 2 references to support your argument

7-Instructions

Complete the assignment posted by your instructor. Answer in at least 250 words and cite sources. Think about the business you will be working on in the class as well as you apply.

Part 1:

Give 1 good example and 1 bad example of structure which will enhance a person's ability to scan long numbers (or important information) from a brand or government website. For example in the text is (800) 234-3432 is easier to see and recall than 8002343432, while 6/12/2019 is easier to read than 6122019. Or you can upload a bad example. Why is this important? How can this have a positive or negative impact on the business?

Part 2:

After reading Chapter 6, give an example of a website that does NOT distinguish colors well. Explain why. What would you make for changes to improve this experience for consumers?

8-

Instructions

Answer in at least 250 words. After reading Chapter 3,4,5 complete the following. Apply to the business you are focused on in this class.

  • How will you create smooth visual hierarchy for your website or app users? What are some of the ways you can do this and make it easy to find information, and enter information on a form, for example?
  • How will you ensure your user of words is clear, easy to understand for all types of users, not redundant or excessive.
  • Provide an example of a page you may have a Sale or Promotion - explain how you may layout the page - for example, where will the image be, what Call to Action will you have on the page, how can they enter information on a form (such as email) easily? Menu dropdrown?
  • Provide examples of what colors you will use and why - how will you allow for easy distinguishing of colors?

9-

Instructions

Respond to the Discussion Question posted by your instructor (by Thursday) and respond to at least two peer's posts (by Sunday).

Comment on other students' mini essays.

This is your chance to be illiterate!

What would change for you AND society if everyone suddenly lost the ability to read? (And we might as well add "lose the ability to write" because there would be no point writing). Think broadly. Remember that cultures exist which have no writing, but they are very different from ours. Let me know what you see that society like.

Be sure to discuss the theories, studies, opposing theories that explain/support your argument Include at least 2 references to support your argument

10-Instructions

Respond to the Discussion Question posted by your instructor (by Thursday) and respond to at least two peer's posts (by Sunday).

The text discusses memory in depth, so we do not need to repeat that here. Instead we will look at a memory and attempt to determine why it became so. You cannot do this assignment on items that you do not remember! . In a previous lesson we "forgot" how to read. We know in societies which do not use writing that people remember a lot of information, because they have to. We tend to rely on writing, and, in the last century, electronic record keeping. So we do not have to remember as much. But we still remember experiences and people.

So, describe a vivid memory. A person, place, or event, a song, vision, logo, etc than you remember well, and believe you always will remember. Then say WHY you think that person, place or thing, is much more memorable than many other similar things.

Be sure to discuss the theories, studies, opposing theories that explain/support your argument Include at least 2 references to support your argument

11-

Instructions

Answer in at least 250 words

  1. Choose either a good attention getting screen, picture, menu, logo, etc. or a bad one. Describe it and say why you think it works, or doesn't work. Does your view align with the ideas in the text?
  2. How will you utilize good visuals and color on your site, app, digital experiences for your company?
  3. Explain a recent experience you had that was very positive, and how you will apply it to your company

12-3Instructions

Aftering reading Chapters 6,7 (Submit as a ppt or pptx with speaker notes or PDF with a word document with notes)

Answer in at least 250 words. Apply the below to the company you are focused on in this class:

  • Discuss how speaking and understanding spoken language is a natural human ability, but reading is not.
  • Explain how learning to read involves training our visual system to recognize patterns.
  • How will you take the above into consideration for your user design?
  • Describe how reading can be either a feature-drive process or a context-driven process.
  • Provide examples of how poor information design can disrupt reading including with sites and apps and how you will be careful around this with your company
  • Explain why much of the reading required by software is unnecessary.
  • List the strengths and weaknesses of human attention and memory, and explain how to design interactive systems that support and augment attention and memory00
