In Chapter 11, you read about Capital Budgets. You also watched videos on this topic. For Week Six Discussion, consider the following scenario:
A company is considering investing $12 million in a new automated production system. The system is expected to reduce labor costs and improve product quality, but it also involves new technology and uncertain future demand. Management has calculated a positive Net Present Value (NPV) for the project, but some executives are still hesitant about moving forward.
In your post, address the following:
- Capital Budgeting Tool
- Briefly explain what NPV tells managers in a capital budgeting decision.
- Why is a positive NPV normally considered a good sign?
- Risk and Uncertainty
- Identify at least two risks or uncertainties related to this investment.
- Explain how those risks could affect whether the project is actually successful.
- Managerial Judgment
- Should management rely only on the NPV result, or should other factors be considered?
- Give at least one example of a non-financial factor that should influence the decision.
