Principles of Marketing

Post 1: Initial post addressing the discussion board topic.

Many people might immediately picture advertising or aggressive sales tactics when they think of marketing. However, marketing encompasses much more, centering on the customer and ensuring their satisfaction. It is also about generating demand. Discuss how consumers make purchasing decisions by considering the four Ps of marketing (product, price, place, and promotion). Please provide examples to illustrate your points.

The STP process—segmentation, targeting, and positioning—is a fundamental marketing framework used to identify and communicate effectively with specific customer segments. To better understand the needs, behaviors, and motivations of these segments, marketers often create personas and customer journey maps. Personas are detailed, semi-fictional representations of ideal customers based on market research, while customer journey maps visualize the steps a customer takes to engage with a brand.

Consider a product or service you are familiar with. How could the use of personas and customer journey maps improve its market positioning?

When consumers make purchasing decisions, they are often influenced by the four Ps of marketing: product, price, place, and promotion. While many people think marketing is simply advertising, it actually involves understanding customer needs and creating value for them. For example, when purchasing a new smartphone, consumers evaluate the product itself, including features, quality, and design. Price also plays a major role because customers compare options to determine which offers the best value for their budget. Place refers to where the product is sold and how easy it is to obtain. Many consumers prefer retailers like Amazon because of convenience and fast delivery. Promotion influences purchasing decisions through advertising, social media, reviews, discounts, and recommendations from others.

A product I am familiar with is Starbucks coffee. Starbucks successfully uses the STP process to reach different customer groups. Through segmentation, Starbucks identifies customers based on factors such as age, lifestyle, and buying habits. The company then targets individuals who value convenience, premium coffee, and a personalized experience. Finally, Starbucks positions itself as more than just a coffee shop by creating a comfortable atmosphere and emphasizing quality.

Personas and customer journey maps could further improve Starbucks' market positioning. For example, a persona might be a busy professional who orders coffee through the mobile app before work. A customer journey map would track every interaction from seeing a promotion, placing a mobile order, picking up the drink, and earning rewards points. By understanding these touchpoints, Starbucks can identify areas for improvement, personalize marketing efforts, and increase customer satisfaction. This customer-focused approach helps build stronger relationships and encourages repeat business, which is ultimately the goal of effective marketing.

Marketing seems to be this continuous merry go round. I have a product Let me find the perfect person for my product. I find the perfect person for my product, but now, how do I make the customer see this is the perfect product for them. Let me address the customers need to a solution. I have a Solution to the customers problem, but will the customer be satisfied with the solution. How do I present to a customer that I have a product that meets their specific need to fix a problem and reassure said customer that they will be satisfied with the product before they ever even come looking for a solution to said problem.

I'll take my self now for example how do marketer's influencing my purchases. I am a very much so problem solution-oriented person. I have a need for something I go and get said something. As I wrote that i realized I do have a few steps in between. First, I mention to the wife hey I need to let's say it's a tool, "I need to get said tool from Home Depot or Lowes or a specific store". I mention it to her just in case the honey dew list has grown and I can pick up extra material. Immediately my phone might suggest the tool I mentioned from different brands on m social medias platforms. Ill begin to look through reviews and recommendations and compare pricing. Pricing, reviews, and how quickly I can get a product will determine my next step. Usually from there if I can, I like to put my hands on it so to the store I go. Ai Marketing hears my need for something and begins to offer solutions. while in the store I might get a promotion email based on my phone seeing my location and sharing that im in store. Marketing figures out what my problem is and presents me with a solution based on what it thinks my needs may be.
