Overview

first work : 1/2 + 1/3 = ?As discussed in this week's video (Video 3: Fraction ComputatioLinks to an external site.), word choice is really important when we create real-world problems for fraction computations.  To demonstrate this reality, please consider the following 4 sample problems, each of which includes the fractions 1/2 and 1/3.  For this discussion board, you will consider which of the examples (if any!) can be represented correctly as 1/2 + 1/3 =?

Example A:  Ari pours ½ of a cup of sand into an empty box.  Then Ari pours 1/3 of a cup of sand into the box.  How many cups of sand are in the box?

Example B: Tom has a full glass of water.  Tom pours ½ cup of water from the glass into an empty bowl.  Then Tom pours in another 1/3 of the water from the glass into the bowl.  How many cups of water are in the bowl now?

Example C: ½ of the boys are wearing tennis shoes.  1/3 of the girls in the class are wearing tennis shoes.  What fraction of the class is wearing tennis shoes?

Example D:  ½ of the children at Russell Elementary School say they would like to visit the zoo.  1/3 of the children at Russell Elementary School say they would like to visit the Science Museum.  What fraction of the children at Russell Elementary School would like to visit the zoo or the Science Museum?

Second work 2: Mathematical Practices & Fractions Topic 1.- Please click the following links to learn about the Mathematical Practices and how they relate to the Common Core State Standards of Math.

Task.-

  • You will gather in groups to present ONE Mathematical Practice, along and related to ONE topic pertaining to Fractions.

PLEASE READ ALL THREE SOURCES.

  • You will prepare the following information to share with the group:

1. What is your Mathematical Practice?

  • 2. How does it relate to the Common Core State Standards?

3. You will explain what it entails for lower grades (K-6)

  • 4. You will explain what it entails for upper grades (7-12)

Topic 2.- TO DO AND PRESENT IN CLASS

Relate your Mathematical Practice to one of the following topics about Fractions:

1. What is a fraction, its components, & what to use them for in real life   -   Mathematical Practice 1   -   Grade 3

2. Equivalent Fractions   -   Mathematical Practice 2   -   Grade 4

3. Simplification of Fractions  -  Mathematical Practice 3   -   Grade 5

4. Adding Fractions  -   Mathematical Practice 4   -   Grade 6

5. Subtracting Fractions  -   Mathematical Practice 5   -   Grade 7

6. Multiplying Fractions  -   Mathematical Practice 6   -   Grade 8

7. Dividing Fractions   -   Mathematical Practice 7   -   Grade 9/10

8. Converting fractions to percentages and decimals   -   Mathematical Practice 8   -   Grade 11/12

About fractions, please explain the following:

1) What it means

2) How to do it step by step

3) Mention link to Mathematical Practice

4) Use a real-world application problem

5) Mention 1 form to differentiate for English Language Learners, and 1 form to differentiate for another population.
