Excel discussion

Overview

Step 1: Hopefully you have a good understanding of graphs from Topic 1 in our course. Please watch the following video on Misleading Graphs:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETbc8GIhfHo

What are some common things people should look out for when reading misleading graphs? Were you originally aware that graphs could be misleading?

Please look at the graph below and determine what may be misleading about the graph

Looking at the graph, which gender has the higher GPA?

From the bars in the graph, does it appear that women have a much higher GPA than male counterpart or just a slightly higher GPA?

From the vertical axes scale, do women really have a much higher GPA? What is the difference in average GPA for women and men?

Step 2: Please use Excel and create the graph for GPA of men and women, make sure the vertical scale starts at 0. Please upload the Excel file with your post.

When looking at the graph with a vertical axes starting at 0, does it appear that women have a much higher GPA than male counterpart or does it appear they have a slightly higher GPA?

  • Which graph is more appropriate to display the data?
  • Step 3: Try to find 2 misleading graphs from an online news website. Please upload a link to each graph in your post.
  • Please state what you find misleading about your graph.

Step 4: Please complete the Correlation Activity Worksheet in Chapter 2 learning materials under correlation tab. Upload the Excel file with the completed scatterplots and answer the questions in the Excel file.
