Quantitative Literacy (MAT-143-2902)

Introduction

Today, we have found that the cost of living is rising while the pay increases may or may not be keeping up.

Looking at the Social Security’s Average Wage Index (https://www.ssa.gov/oact/cola/awidevelop.html) for the years 2018 – 2022 we can glean some very interesting information.

For this project, you will research salary information for your chosen profession from the internet.

You will then use this information to predict the salary growth of your profession and compare it to the national average.

This project relates to the following course objectives:

  • Judge the reasonableness of results using estimation, logical processes, and a proper understanding of quantity.
  • Identify, interpret, and compare linear and exponential rates of growth to make predictions and informed decisions based on data and graphs.
  • Describe, analyze, and interpret statistical information such as graphs, tables, and summarized data to draw appropriate conclusions when presented with actual statistical studies.
  • Analyze civic and/or societal issues and critique decisions using relevant mathematics.

The Assignment

(1.) Research your chosen career’s average salary for the years 2018 through 2022.

  • If you decide to use ChatGPT, you may use a prompt such as “What is the median software engineer salary for each year between 2018 and 2022, with references?” Replace “software engineer” with your chosen career.

(2.) Be sure to cite all sources.

(3.) Answer the six questions on the attached document below

(4.) Type or write out your answers and upload your responses as either a Word Document or PDF file.
