Maths Lab Ball toss

Overview

1. Think about the motion of the ball as it is thrown up into the air (toss), rises and falls as a projectile (free-fall), and is caught (catch). Predict the sign (+, , or 0) of the velocity and acceleration of the ball at each of the following times. The Toss t0 Begining of the toss: vy: ay: t1 End of the toss, before free-fall: vy: ay: Free-Falll t2 Begining of the free-fall: vy: ay: t3 Maximum height: vy: ay: t4 End of free-fall: vy: ay: The Catch t5 Begining of the catch, after free-fall: vy: ay: t6 End of the catch: vy: ay: 2. Print the position, velocity, and acceleration vs time graphs of the ball. In each graph, mark the portions of the graph that correspond to the Toss, ball rising in free-fall, ball falling in free-fall, and the catch. Label the time axis with the appropriate sub-scripted times from above. 3. Use the appropriate graphs to record the velocity of the ball at the beginning of free-fall (v0y) and the position (ymax), velocity (vy), and acceleration (ay) of the ball at maximum height. Record the values below. v0y = ymax = vy = ay = 4. Make a quadratic t to the free-fall portion of the position vs time graph. Record the best- t parameters in the top row and the expected values of these parameters in the bottom row below. A = B = C = A = B = C = 5. Make a linear t to the free-fall portion of the velocity vs time graph. Record the best- t parameters in the top row and the expected values of these parameters in the bottom row below. A = B = A = B = 6. Use the statistics button to determine the average (mean) value and the uncertainty (standard deviation) of the free-fall portion of the acceleration vs time graph. Record the value in the form g g below, rounded appropriately. 7. Are the values of g obtained from the three graphs consistent with each other? Explain brie y. 8. What is the percent error in the precision of the acceration obtained from the acceleration vs time graph? 9. What is the percent error in the accuracy of the acceration obtained from the acceleration vs time graph? Use 9.80 m s 2 as the expected value. 10. Is the measured acceration due to gravity accurate? Explain brie y.
