Math 5103 authentic application

Assignment 1 Authentic Application

Throughout this course, emphasis has been placed on authentic application of mathematical knowledge. Use what you have learned in this course, your own experience and research, and the following prompts to write an original post:

  • Describe an example from your experience of (or interest in) an evidence-based approach to authentic (real-world) learning?
  • From the course and your own research, what theories align to support your example?
  • Provide an example in which authentic application made a difference in your instruction and student learning. Explain the aspects of the lesson which differentiated it from a traditional approach.

Comment on the posts of at least two classmates. APA citations are required only for the original post

Assignment 2

Where Will I Ever Use This?’ Leisure or Hobby

Leisure or hobbies often lead us to discover new interests. Mathematics is embedded in almost all human activity; we could lead students to develop a greater interest in mathematics through activities they enjoy.

In this assignment, you will explore answers to the question, “Where will I ever use mathematics in leisure or hobby experiences?”

Step 1 Describe aspects of a personal hobby or leisure time activity.

For example, if you are near water, sailing might be a hobby.

Step 2 Identify a challenging problem related to your hobby or leisure activity. Describe it in mathematical terms, like the rising cost of art supplies, the number of pieces in a difficult jigsaw puzzle, or the depth of snow on a ski hill.

Using our sailing example, the wind’s direction determines what must be done with the sails.

Step 3 With the problem identified, describe at least one mathematical concept or essential idea related to the problem. Outline an approach to solving the problem you identified.

For example, sailing requires an understanding of angles in order to adjust the sails to move in specific directions. Thus, this is a geometry problem. We would explain the angle the sail needs to be if our destination is North and the wind is from the East.

Step 4 Imagine you want to show a friend or relative how mathematics impacts your selected activity. Create an analogy, outline a demonstration, reference a literary work, or use manipulatives to convey the essence of the mathematical problem you identified.

Using our sailing example, lift and drag for a sail is similar to the function of wings on an airplane or kite.

Step 5 Compile your work into a 2- to 3-page paper, not counting the APA-formatted title and reference pages. Include in-text citations for any sources you use.

Your paper should clearly demonstrate one answer to “How are mathematical concepts used in my leisure time or hobby?”

Step 6
Submit your final paper.
