Assignment 1

Connecting to an Integrated Approach

Moving to an integrated, thematic curriculum is a big change in many classrooms, schools, and districts.

Review a website of your choice and use the resource to design a lesson which integrates a mathematics concept/content area and another discipline.

Use the following prompts to write an original post:

  • How do the examples you’ve seen in your classmates’ posts compare with previous curricula in your educational experience?
  • What changes would you see in your learning environment if you switched to an integrated, thematic approach to curriculum? What would remain the same?
  • How do you think your state standards or the Common Core Standards could influence a change to an integrated, thematic curriculum in secondary mathematics? Be specific, and use examples.
  • What value would integrative thinking have when contemplating a change of this magnitude?

Comment on the posts of at least two classmates. APA citations are required only for the original response.

Assignment 2

Where Will I Ever Use This?’ Final Project

Submit the assignment by 11:59 PM PT Sunday of Module 5.

The world we live in is complex. Part of the beauty and wonder of mathematics is finding the simplicity of patterns in life in the midst of global dimensions.

A mathematics tool, procedure, or technique is any support used in mathematical thinking. Mathematical operations, estimation techniques, math graphs and models, spreadsheets, data sets, Venn diagrams, and problem-based lessons support and demonstrate mathematical thinking.

In this assignment, you will explore answers to the question, “When will I ever stop using mathematics?” You will show how mathematics permeates life now and in the past by connecting mathematics to current and historical issues from two articles or news stories.

Step 1 Locate two articles or news stories reflecting mathematical connections: one current and one historical. For instance, the disappearing rainforest is a current issue, and the Industrial Revolution was a historical time filled with mathematics connections.

Summarize each article, including in-text citations, and create a reference page.

Step 2 State one mathematical problem associated with each story.

Select a mathematical tool, procedure, or technique related to the mathematical connection for each article or news story. State or show how it describes the problem, supports thinking about the problem, and potentially solves the problem.

For additional examples, view the conference session presentations or explore the software tools at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics websiteLinks to an external site..

Step 3 Reflect on the pervasiveness of mathematics in the present world and throughout history.

Reflect on addressing “Where am I ever going to use this?” when the students ask. Review the other assignments for additional ideas.

Step 4 Compile a 2- to 3-page reflection essay incorporating the following:

  • an introduction about mathematics in society,
  • summaries of each article or news story and the mathematics problems and tools related to them, and
  • a conclusion about answering students’ question, “Where will I ever use this?” Take the approach “When will I ever stop using mathematics?”

Step 5 Submit your 2- to 3-page reflection essay along with APA-formatted title and reference pages.
