  • Reply to two of your classmates. Please mention the name of the classmate at the top of the reply.
  • Each classmate's reply should contain at least 25 words.

Questions

For each discussion, students will post their responses to the question set.

Q1. What signs use numbers (such as speed limits and gas prices) when you are on the highway or any road? Mention at least four signs with numbers and explore the following questions. Are the units of the numbers given on the signboard? If not, how are you expected to know the units? Does every sign with the number have a unit?

Q2. Most countries have a lower legal limit than the United States for BAC while driving. For example, you are considered legally drunk at a BAC of 0.05 in much of Europe, Canada, Australia, and South Africa, and the legal driving limit is 0.02 in Norway and Sweden. The National Transportation Safety Board has predicted that lowering the U.S. limit to 0.05 would save about 7000 lives each year (by reducing fatalities caused by drunk drivers).

A. What is BAC in the above statement? What is its unit?

B. What is the BAC to be legally drunk in the United States?

Q3. It takes you 30 seconds to walk from the first (ground) floor of a building to the third floor. How long will it take to walk from the first to the sixth floor (at the same pace, assuming all floors have the same height)? Explain your answer.

Q4. In the following case, decide which of the two given prices is the better deal and explain why.

You can buy a box of 150 Sharpie pens for $165 OR a dozen for $13.50.

Q5. A toll collector on a highway receives $2 for cars and $3 for buses. At the end of 1 hour, she has collected $32. How many cars and buses passed through the toll booth during that period? List at least four possible solutions.
