Feeding the World Discussion

Overview

Read and Watch/Listen to some selection of the following:

Read: Mooney, Pat et al. (2021), “A Long Food Movement: Transforming Food Systems by 2045”

Watch: Mooney, Pat (2021), “The Corporate Bamboozle on World Food Systems”

Read: Salatin, Joel (2007), “1,000,000 Mile Chicken,” from Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal

Actions

You can raise whatever relevant issues you like here, but if you're not sure where to start, I suggest thinking about questions like these:

(1) Based upon what you've heard/read from Mooney, Salatin, Silbergeld, and Teachout in this module, in your judgment, what can be done (at any level – international organizations, government, industry, small farmers, consumers) to feed the world with plenty of safe, nutritious food?

(2) Silbergeld, Salatin, and Mooney share some common ground in arguing that US (and even global) agricultural regulation systematically favors the interests of industrial agriculture over smallholder agriculture while simultaneously undermining (or at least falling short of securing) food safety and quality. Yet they have different prescriptions for what should be done (put simply: Silbergeld favors better-regulated industrial food production; Salatin favors deregulation with the hope that this will empower smallholder farmers; Mooney favors a policy regime that empowers smallholder and traditional agriculture globally). What do you think about these different approaches/values?

(3) To what extent does the interplay between values and technology set the course of change in the agricultural economy, in your opinion? To what extent can technological innovation shape a desirable future for food? (You might to well to recall Winner's "Do Artifacts Have Politics?" here.)

(4) Are there other resources you'd like to bring to the discussion that you think might be illuminating here?

(5) Any other matters you'd like to address
