Week 2 Overview: News Literacy, Grand Conspiracy, and Separating Truth from Nonsense

Teaching News Literacy in the Digital Age

Our topic this week is the next level in epistemology: navigating digital media without losing your head. Plato, Descartes, and al Ghazali had it easy, didn't they? They never had to worry about Russian bot-farms seeding their Twitter feeds with disinformation. They didn't have corporate paymasters and political super-PACs shaping the news of the day. They knew about lies, but there was no such thing as fake news. You and me, we've got to defend our epistemological standards from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

The image above is from The Chronicle of Higher Education, way back in 2012. That's four years before the term "fake news" even existed. If they were worried about digital deception then, our movie this week would send them fleeing for the hills. Be sure to watch The Social Dilemma early in the week, so our discussion forum about it makes sense to you.

In this week's Checklist, "CC:NDI" means "Crash Course: Navigating Digital Information." As usual, scroll down and you'll find the links and writing exercises embedded in the task list below.
