Overview
Hi, I need a 7-8 minute PowerPoint presentation explaining how food and sacrifice are used you in Christianity. here are my teachers instructions.
How do they use food in ceremony and ritual practice? What are specific sacrifices? How can we make meanings of it?
Interaction between experience and rational reflection: back and forth
• From your experience (previous experiences and the group research) to the understanding:
• Step of the individual description. Starting from the description of what happens (space, music, words, assembly, officiants, gestures, etc…) raw experience (aesthetical, moral, spiritual or political).
o Step of the personal reflection: reflection on the research: what meaning(s); what is to be learnt from it: anthropological, political, social, philosophical meaning.
o Step of the group reflection: sharing with others about your research in the group discussion, reaching a deeper knowledge; elaboration of a common presentation for the final report.
o
• From reason to the experience:
o Theoretical step: study the different approaches to rituals (essentialist approach: what a ritual is; functional approach: what a ritual does; existentialist approach: what is the meaning of a ritual for these traditions; hermeneutical approach: how do we interpret a ritual; genealogical approach: what are the effects of rituals in terms of individual and social discipline;…), compare them, discuss them.
Critical step: how these different theoretical approaches help us or not to understand better the religious rituals.
Intercultural and inter-religious dimensions
• Learn from the religious rituals of another culture.
• Understand the commonalities and differences of religious traditions: in what ways the religious rituals of different traditions express and realize some fundamental truths and functions about human beings and societies
• How different religious traditions mix each other and give rise to global rituals (international standardization due to the mass media), and at the same time how the rituals remained contextualized (in the specific context of a country, city, social group…)
