AHS Philosophy from On Truth and Lie in An Extra Moral Sense Essay

Overview

I'm working on a philosophy question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Essay 2

Instructions: Answer one of the following essay prompts

  • (On Truth & Lying in an Extra-Moral Sense) Given Nietzsche’s analysis of truth, what has Nietzsche accomplished with his analysis on truth in this essay (what has happened to the binary opposition between “truth” and “lying”)? In your response, address the following: (1) explain how language falsifies the world, according to Nietzsche (Think of why the term “metaphor” is important in this essay); (2) identify and explain provisional definition of “truth” that Nietzsche offers following his arguments about how concepts are formed, as well as the conclusions he thereby draws about the value of “truth”; (3) Explain Nietzsche’s view about “liars”.
  • Haslanger states that her definitions do not capture people’s ordinary understandings of “woman”, “man”, and “gender”. Given this, in what ways does she believe that her definitions are useful? In your response, address the following: (1) explain Haslanger’s view about what is important (or at stake) when claiming that something is socially constructed (and how this is different from the “ordinary view” of concepts/ideas); (2) explain what Haslanger means by “discursive construction”.
  • Toward the end of his lecture, Existentialism is A Humanism, Jean-Paul Sartre dismisses what he regards as one of two possible meanings of the word ‘humanism’. Explain the version of humanism that Sartre disagrees with and his reasons for doing so. In your response, be sure to explain the following: (1) the principle that ‘existence precedes essence’ and Sartre’s paper knife example; (2) Sartre’s concepts of abandonment and anguish, as well as his ‘student example’ and the ‘Abraham example’; and (3), the idea that ‘man is nothing other than his own project.’
