Hume Impressions and Descartes Clear and Distinct Essay

Overview

I'm working on a philosophy writing question and need support to help me learn.

1)  Hume says that we should ground knowledge on what he calls "impressions" rather than on the "clear and distinct" rational principles that Descartes views as foundational.  What does Hume mean by "impressions" and why does he start there?  Is he right?  Defend or criticize Hume's empiricist starting point.
