Overview
1. Evaluate Hume’s rejection of “social contract” theory. What do you see are the strengths and weaknesses in Hume’s position regarding “duty” and “utility” in terms of allegiance and consent of an individual to one’s government? Do you agree with Hume that citizenship is dependent on self-interest? Why or why not?
To what extent do you agree or disagree with the ethical arguments you are being asked to consider and evaluate?

? How does this differ from how a contemporary citizen enters into a
“formal relationship” with the current government --- along with one's assumed duty to it?
? Do citizens give genuine and voluntary consent to their governments? Or, do governments and political systems “rule” without consent? From where does authority ultimately come?
? What is the difference between duty or allegiance or obedience and utility of greatest good for the greatest number?
