Discussion

Overview

I'm working on a philosophy multi-part question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

A. Please review this story : http://time.com/time-person-of-the-year-ebola-fighters-choice/

Taking into consideration the four lessons expressed by Emanuel in Lessons of SARS, what additional lesson did you take away from the Ebola outbreak in 2013-2014 that you'd recommend to future healthcare professionals confronting a pandemic (like Covid-19)?

What potential conflicts of duties might arise from this: "Affirming health care workers’ ethical duty to care for the sick imposes a correlative duty on health care administrators and senior physicians to quickly develop and deploy procedures to maximize the safety of frontline physicians and nurses." (Emanuel, 591)

B. Something for you to consider as professionals: In Cantor and Baum (p. 2008): "This issue [conscientious objection] raises important questions about individual rights and public health. Who should prevail when the needs of patients and the morals of providers collide?

  1. C. Should pharmacists have a right to reject prescriptions for emergency contraception? The contours of conscientious objection remain unclear. This article elucidates those boundaries and offers a balanced solution to a complex problem. Because the future of over-the-counter emergency contraception is in flux, this issue remains salient for physicians and their patients."
  2. Reconstruct in your own words one of the arguments raised by the authors, which can be EITHER in favor of or against a pharmacist’s right to object.

D. Explain briefly if you agree with Lidell et al about who should get the ventilator.
