Question 1: The religious theorists Augustine, and Aquinas theoretically justify Christianity as a state religion. Within each theory the theorist explains why monarchy is the best form of government compare and contrast how each theorist's justification of monarchy as the best form of government relying on their metaphysical justification. Which justification of monarchy makes the most sense to you and why? Since each theorist is combines previous theories with Christianity, making a clear connection between the religious theorist's justification and the influence of Plato and Aristotle in the development of the theories should be evident throughout the essay.
Question 2: Machiavelli's pragmatic approach to power has earned him the reputation of being evil, what is Machiavelli's view of human nature, how does this view of human nature affect Machiavelli's theory on power? In addition to Machiavelli's view of human nature Machiavelli focuses on the concept of power and how to maintain power, discuss the characteristics that a Prince should and should not have in order to seize and maintain power. Overall, what is your opinion of Machiavelli's theory? Is he evil or just a pragmatist? Justify your answer using at least three examples from Machiavelli.
