- According to Papineau, would ballet be a sport? Explain. (Note: There might not be a clear and definitive answer to this question. What I'm interested in seeing here is how you think through your answer. Also, make sure that you apply Papineau's own view to the question. For part of the article he does something that is often done in philosophy writing--first describing and then criticizing someone else's view--before presenting one's own, presumably better, view. Be sure not to apply the view he criticizes, but rather his own view about what sport is.) Include at least one quotation from the reading, 1-2 sentences long, to support your view.
- According to you, is ballet a sport? Explain and justify your answer. To do so, first you will need to provide your own defintiion of what sport is (Don't use a dictionary! It's surprisingly hard to come up with good definitions of many concepts. State the conditions that you think have to be met for some activity to count as a sport. Don't just repeat Papineau's view. Display your learning about necessary and sufficient conditions.). Second, you will need to refer to some of ballet's characteristics and explain why they do or do not meet the conditions set out in your own definition.
