1) Compare the myth that the United States says about our own empire development with the myths of the Lost Cause. How are they both examples of American myths and how do they perpetuate specific goals and ideals?
2) How were African-Americans and Native Americans pushed aside in the name of unity and national identity in the late nineteenth century?
3) How did the American Southerners remember the American in comparison to how the American Northerners remembered the American Civil War? Consider museum spaces and war memorials and how they chose to mythologize the event. How did they both deal with African-Americans, similarly and differently?
4) How was manifest destiny both a racial and a political idea? Explain the impact on both Native Americans and numerous other groups in the nineteenth century.
