Philosophy Question

Overview

Write an essay of at least 1,200 words in response to all of the questions below. Your essay should be an essay and not a list of responses to the questions. It should conform to the "Essay Format Guide." Answers should be particular and detailed, drawing on your experiences and observations; generalized answers are not helpful in response to questions like these.

The textbook suggests this provisional definition of ethics: “We think or act ethically when we take care for the basic needs and legitimate expectations of others as well as our own” (Weston, 7). This essay assignment asks you to examine (not accept unquestioningly as true) this definition in your own life. Good essays will demonstrate understanding of relevant concepts in Chapters 1–3. Your essay should include five correctly cited quotations with at least one from each chapter.

1. Record the events of your life for two days.

2. Think about those events in terms of basic needs and legitimate expectations of the people involved (including yourself), and answer these questions:

a. What are your basic needs and legitimate expectations in the particular situations you observed? b. What are others’ basic needs and legitimate expectations that you notice in particular situations? c. How did you determine others’ basic needs and legitimate expectations?

3. In the situations you observed,

a. How were basic needs and legitimate expectations met or unmet? b. What are reasons they were met or unmet? c. What are the conditions (physical, social, ethical) that enable or prevent meeting needs and expectations?

4. Do any basic needs and legitimate expectations come into conflict in the situations you observed?

(Needs or expectations in conflict may mean they cannot be realized at the same time or in the same place or by the same person or people. Here are some simple examples: your need to keep your job to pay your bills and your need to recover from an illness; your need for sleep after an exhausting day and your family's expectation that you join them for a celebration or special meal; your expectation of using your shared dorm room for quiet study and your roommate's expectation of using the dorm room to relax playing video games with friends).

5. Note ethical short circuits you observe and opportunities for finding sharable terms.

Good essays will include:

a. Adequate and relevant description of experiences b. Description of needs and expectations of self and others, and ways you came to be aware of them c. Distinct statements of how needs and expectations were met or unmet, how they were met or unmet, and conditions influencing this d. Awareness and adequate description of conflicts among needs and expectations of self or others e. Observations of ethical short circuits and opportunities for finding shareable terms.
